About this product

Product Information

Nobel Laureate Pearl S. Buck's epic Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and Oprah Book Club selection about a vanished China and one family's shifting fortunes. Though more than seventy years have passed since this remarkable novel won the Pulitzer Prize, it has retained its popularity and become one of the great modern classics. In The Good Earth Pearl S. Buck paints an indelible portrait of China in the 1920s, when the last emperor reigned and the vast political and social upheavals of the twentieth century were but distant rumblings. This moving, classic story of the honest farmer Wang Lung and his selfless wife O-Lan is must reading for those who would fully appreciate the sweeping changes that have occurred in the lives of the Chinese people during the last century. Nobel Prize winner Pearl S. Buck traces the whole cycle of life: its terrors, its passions, its ambitions and rewards. Her brilliant novel--beloved by millions of readers--is a universal tale of an ordinary family caught in the tide of history.

Superb control of narrative powers; a tour-de-force.

Pearl Buck's prose is utterly compelling; her descriptive powers command your attention and her talents at building character are uncanny. She puts you squarely in the lives of her people, which is no small task. The Good Earth is confidently paced and balanced, and it's not at all difficult to see why she won the Nobel Prize for Literature.

    Good bargains

I truly enjoyed this book - I am trying to read more of the "classics" that were suggested when I was growing up. I was not impressed with the condition of the book. It wasn't described as having writing in it, notes, etc.but I didn't care since I was only looking to read it and pass it on. The condition was described as "Good: A book that has been read but is in good condition. Very minimal damage to the cover including scuff marks, but no holes or tears. The dust jacket for hard covers may not be included. Binding has minimal wear. The majority of pages are undamaged with minimal creasing or tearing, minimal pencil underlining of text, no highlighting of text, no writing in margins. No missing pages. See the seller’s listing for full details and description of any imperfections" - The ...

  • Everyone should read this book.

I read this book years ago and it became a favorite. It's a fascinating novel that's hard to put down. I bought this copy and re-read it last month and it was even better the second time. It inspired me to find out more about the author, the movie, the places and customs described in the story. I watched a great 1958 interview of Pearl S. Buck by Mike Wallace on youtube. Then I passed the book on to my sister, who had never heard of it, and she loved it. Oprah knew what she was doing when she recommended this book.

  • Love Pearl S. Buck

This is a classic book, i read it when i was fifteen and loved learning about chinese way of life during the turn of the century. Now im 55 and enjoyed reading it again. This should be a classic book that should be required reading in high schools.

  • The Good Earth, by Pearl Buck

This Pulitzer Prize winning novel is a moderately difficult read. The story delves into the mind and hearts of a Chinese family prior to the revolution. As the Ms Buck weaves the tapestry of this family's life, we are treated to the private thoughts and revelations of one man who's outward demeanor appears to be without emotion. The tapestry becomes more intricate in pattern as he takes a wife and then a lover. As we peek into the marriage, we are prodded to inspect and understand the ways of generations old beliefs. As the story prgresses, depth of passions for the land and later for the women he takes to himself--three in all-- overwhelm and finally nearly destroys all he thought to be true. As he dies, his 3 son's appear to distroy all he has worked for his entire ...
