I've been watching for a cheap copy of this book for over a year, never seeing one for less than $35. I saw this copy for $30, and said to myself, "Stay strong, hold out, you'll find one soon for a better price." After waiting a few more weeks, I couldn't stand it any longer. I order the book, and spent the next few days beating myself up for spending $30 on a 12 year old book. Guess what? I got a deal. Robert Reed has written one of the most informative baseball books I have ever read. I thought the historical chapters on Houston's baseball past before the Colt.45s might be dry and boring, but Reed's conversational style and subtle wit make you forget you're getting a history lesson. The numerous pictures throughout the book reinforce the story of this often overlooked chapter in baseball's history. With 2012 being the 50th anniversay of the Colt.45s, it seems as good a time as any to republish (and update?) this fine account of how major league baseball found a home in Houston. Besides, reading this is definately better than watching the Astros play this year.Read full review
It is a piece of Houston history with reminder photos of how it was. I helped build the right field scoreboard so it was more personal for me than most. The photos are the best part while the copy is factual.
