Great for history w/ El Ed homeschoolers & vacationers
It's easy to read and reference and it's broken up into chapters that make sense. This book could be used for 3rd grade to 8th grade. There is enough info to make it interesting for that wide of an age spread. There are simple but fun activities in the book and some sketches to give better ideas for younger students. For middle students, there is a timeline and sidebars of info for more interest and the details could be gone into more. There are also a lot of worksheets that can be found on the internet for free to go along with the book. Our homeschool group did a co-op class and the parent that taught it made it very exciting and included a 2 day field trip. She said it was a book that made teaching easy. I found it very informative not just for the Expedition of Lewis and Clark, but also for the time period itself and how they and the Indians lived, what they ate and wore on the journey, and how they survived the winter. I think it's great for Upper Elementary Education or maybe even middle school. About 38 of the U.S. States could do a 2 day field trip or less with a possible one or two night stayover to some area that Lewis and Clark covered, if not the actual expedition, where they were born or grew up or traveled before the expedition. We lived about 10 hours away to a place on their route. Since they covered a pretty big spread, it makes it accessable to a lot of homeschoolers. You can follow the river route from the Ohio, Mississippi, Wood and Missouri Rivers into the Rockie Mountains then to the Columbia river. All this and much more is covered in the book including details about the explorers, Sacagawea and the Indian tribes encountered. I loved it, and I thought it made history fun.
