An informative read for anyone!
I purchaced Shock because I have been treated for depression for over 15 years and medicines where having a limited affect for me. My doctor had me consider ECT. I was "shocked" that this treatment was still being used and frankly quite dissapointed that it was being considered. After reading "Shock" I completely reassessed my position on ECT. The history of ECT in the beginning of the book was quite an eye opener and it was disturbing how and why it was "overused". Some people will surely find this upsetting. I feel as though Larry Tye did an excellent job of bringing the history and the now modern use of ECT to light. Be sure to get past the beginning history and keep an open mind to see how it is used in modern times correctly and safely before making judgement on the ... Kitty Dukakis brought about a lot of compassion and insight by writing about her disease and her successful treatment with ECT. I'm truly happy that she found her way and is feeling better with successful treatments. I am also impressed that her husband and family supported her with what had to be a terrifying and stressful decision to begin treatments. Let's face it, ECT sounds scary and it has it's risks. Kitty is a powerful spirit to bring this to the public and share her trials with us. I feel as though I was well informed with what I read from Larry Tye to go to Mayo Clinic and talk to Dr. Rasmussen about the possibility of using ECT as a treatment for my depression. I had done research in the internet and all of it pretty much reinforced what I had read in "Shock". It was also suprising the reaction of the doctors I consulted with the accurate information I had from the book. I also liked that Larry Tye didn't polish a perfect picture of ECT. He seemed to balance the benefits and risks of the proceedure with accuracy and honesty. I had gone from thinking what my Dr. was asking me to do as barbaric...to understanding it may be a powerful tool to help me. As the book mentioned, ECT isn't usually effective for people with the type of long term depression I have and after consulting at Mayo this was the diagnosis. What was important to me, is that I understood that it could help and even though I was still nervous and a bit afraid of undergoing ECT even if it would be helpful. I was more understanding and appreciative of the proceedure after reading the book. I think anyone who has an interest in the human mind, depression or about medical proceedures would find this book interesting and informative. Larry Tye also mentioned some of the newer research being done for people with depression and I hope that he considers bringing more of these proceedures to light with future articles or books.
