About this product

Product Information

When "Half-Life" was released on the PC in 1998, it changed the first-person shooter genre almost instantly. "Half-Life" was one of the first games to combine first-person combat with a rich story. In "Half-Life," players step into the role of Dr. Gordon Freeman, a scientist who is accidentally transported to a damaged research facility. This facility also happens to be filled with hostile aliens and government agents bent on keeping their terrible secrets. In 2001, Valve, with the help of Gearbox Software, ported the title to the PlayStation 2. This version of "Half-Life" on the PS2 includes everything you'd find on the PC version. The story is identical to the original release, and the same enemies are present and accounted for. This shooter offers a single-player style that challenges both shooting skills and puzzle solving. Build a staircase out of abandoned supplies or complete a maze of moving conveyor belts to move forward in the game. Killing aliens will give Dr. Freeman extra weapons and supplies. Meanwhile, the G-man watches over your gaming progress. "Half-Life" is not split into levels. Instead, the game always moves forward with the entire game being interconnected. The PS2 version isn't just a straight port as it includes a number of improvements. The most noticeable of these is the graphical facelift the title received. Each section of the game received new textures and improved models. In particular, each character model received a massive overhaul. Both the humans and enemies have eyes that will track your movement across a room. The characters also feature more detailed facial expressions and are more capable of showing anger, fear, and annoyance. The character models have individual, jointed fingers as well. As you play through the game, you'll notice it runs smoothly. "Half-Life" for the PlayStation 2 is a very stable version of the game. Issues previous versions may have had were taken care of for the PlayStation 2 version. Like other PlayStation 2 games, an auto-aim feature is included to make aiming easier. Brackets have also been placed on items and characters the player can interact with. Some controls, such as jumping, have also been simplified and made easier to use in this release. The PS2 port of "Half-Life" features an exclusive co-op mode you won't find anywhere else. "Half-Life: Decay" allows two players to take on the roles of Dr. Gina Cross and Dr. Colette Green. In "Decay," both players will need to fight against the alien invaders and close the rifts appearing in our world. This game type isn't the only exclusive content this port offers either. There is an unlockable alien mission where you play as one of Gordon Freeman's enemies. If you're a fan of the "Half-Life" series of games, this PlayStation edition is a must-have item. The enhanced graphics and exclusive modes are the definitive way to experience this classic game. It's easy to see why this title won multiplayer awards on both the PC and PlayStation systems. A copy of this classic is just what should be added to your collection of games.

    First person shooter Half-Life

Perhaps one of the best first person shooters of all time, Half-Life comes alive with cool and exciting environments, interesting characters, fun and creative gameplay, customizable settings, and tough enemies. You begin the game as a researcher and it's your first day on the job at a secret government research facility set in the American southwest desert. Of course this research goes wrong and now the entire facility is crawling with aliens. What to do now? Pickup the nearest crowbar and first-aid kit survive the best you can. Quickly you'll find a handgun and shotgun and as the game progresses an assault rifle with a grenade launcher (my favorite) rocket launchers, landmines, sticky bombs and even alien weapons later in the game. Other characters will help and fight with you at times. ...

  • One of the best FPS I've ever played

Pro- Terrific story and plot, exciting gameplay (and customizable), great level design, impressive A.I. (for the most part), great challange but not frustrating, good character design, and just plain fun all around. Con- for the most part on the A.I. sometimes alies can act very stupid and will shoot you if you get between them and their target, or be oblivious to the fact that there is a badguy there shooting them, voice acting is a bit retarded and graphics, while impressive at the time, shows its age, and the auto targeting system is a blessing for the greater part, it can be a curse as well but very rare. But for anyone looking for a true Halo killer game franchise, look no furture than HALF-LIFE.

  • IMMORTAL FREEMAN

20 Years later... Half-Life was a great game, and still is a great game. It satisfies every science-fiction, and fast-paced action urges all in one, while also still keeping your interest with the mystery of it's world. Between the portals, the Xen world, the ominous G-man, and the funny scientist you can save or watch them turn into grind-meat, Half-Life just can't get old unless it's the only game you play which is unlikely these days. The graphics are late 90's what else is there to say. I personally love the simple polys and turn off the HD models once in a while just to remember the original look and to go back in time. I loved Quake and Doom as well since I was 10, and started Half-Life later on in High school actually in 2014 when I was 16 or so. My cousin gave me the PS2 ...

  • Great game that never lost its appeal

In an age in which anyone can not only play "Half-Life" in HD on PC, but also play the fantastic improved remake "Black Mesa" on PC, you might wonder why anyone would want to play the old Playstation 2 port. Well, because it's fun, of course! In all seriousness, the game looks pretty good when played on a backwards-compatible PS3 on an HD TV. It offers widescreen support and full control customization, meaning the controls can be reworked to modern standards. If you prefer console to PC (like I do) and still want to experience Half-Life, then this is a legitimately good option.

  • The Legend Begins...

The reason I decided to buy Half-Life on PS2 was after purchasing the Orange Box for PS3 and playing through each of the 5 games on it, including Half-Life 2 and all of its extra episodes. That title absolutely blew me away and after playing through most of the original now, I can say it is just as fun and captivating a game as its sequel. The game play is revolutionary for its time and you keep wanting to know what the hell's going on in the story and when you find out, it's great. I recommend this game for gamer who enjoys first-person-shooters that offer a bit of a challenge and make you think a little bit instead of just blasting everything in sight. I have found that this title is a bit more difficult than part two, so don't expect an easy sail-through. Gordon Freeman has to be ...
