AN OLD ORGAN FAVORITE RETURNS
I bought this CD to again, after many years, hear E. Power Biggs' take on the Saint-Saens Symphony #3. I had this on vinyl many years ago, so it was time to re-visit it. Biggs gives a good account of this "war-horse," considering the ultra-dry acoustics of The Academy of Music in Philadelphia. This room is great for orchestra, but the acoustics are so dead that the Aeolian-Skinner organ suffers immensely. And, given the fact that Biggs wouldn't use full organ, even if his life depended on it, it's a shame that this organ, now since removed, doesn't have a better representation. The Philadelphia Orchestra, on the other hand, is in top form under Eugene Ormandy...get the later Virgil Fox recording, even though it is on a Rodgers electronic, it "rocks" compared to this.
