About this product

Product Information

This is the story of a self-educated, charismatic, gifted leader who overcame personal tragedy in childhood and was elected the youngest mayor of a major city in America at age twenty-six. It is the story of a reformer who possessed a genius for politics. James K. McGuire (1868-1923) was elected mayor of Syracuse three times as a Democrat in a Republican bastion. As a candidate for governor in 1898, he nearly derailed the rise of Theodore Roosevelt. His ideas and positions informed the candidacy of William Jennings Bryan in his quest for the presidency and the platform of the Democratic Party in those elections. Fahey narrates McGuire's remarkable rise to become a major figure in national politics as well as his questionable business dealings along the way. Indicted twice during his life, he was investigated by Congress and the Department of Justice for his advocacy of Irish freedom. McGuire befriended and aided Éamon de Valera and the Irish freedom fighters of that time, using his influence at the highest levels of the American government to further the cause of Ireland. This fascinating portrait reveals a complex man who earned a place on the national political stage and battled for the causes in which he deeply believed.

James K. McGuire (1868-1923) was skillful regional politician who later in life became a controversial figure on the national scene as well as the protector of Eamon de Valera while the Irish leader was a fugitive from British justice. Although the child of Irish immigrants, McGuire was educated in German-language schools in Syracuse, New York. He was elected to the first of three terms as mayor of Syracuse, when he was twenty-seven., thus earning the nick-name the "Boy Mayor." He helped to establish the city's first art museum, the Everson, invited Andrew Carnegie to build the city library, paved streets for the first time, and pushed to establish thirty-eight public schools. On leaving office, he entered the asphalt business at a time when all the nation's highways were being paved. A powerful public speaker in the cause of Irish nationalism from his teenage years, he championed the cause of Imperial Germany at the beginning of World War I, publishing The King, The Kaiser and Irish Freedom in 1914. Friends in high places protected him from recrimination as the War progressed. When the surviving leader of the 1916 Easter Rising, escaped from British jails in 1919 to come to the United States in a fund-raising tour, McGuire provided refuge and guidance. The exhaustive research of author Joseph E. Fahey, McGuire's grand-nephew, includes unpublished family documents., James K. McGuire: Boy Mayor and Irish Nationalist (Syracuse Univ. Beyond great price. The media itself (CDs) were in NM (near mint) condition. Packaging was in fair condition, so stating Good in the description was reasonable if not downplaying the media itself. Nothing to complain about. Shipping was free and arrived exactly a week later (5 business days). Would definitely recommend and do business with seller again! A++

SecondSalecom is one of my go to sellers, because they have a large selection and I can usually find the book or movie that I want from them at a low price if not the lowest price on eBay. Also, when I buy three books/movies I get a fourth book/movie free. Shipping is also free. This was a great transaction. The DVD was packaged well, shipped promptly and is just as described. I will be back to buy again. Thank you!!
