SynopsisFirst Black Library novel starring the mysterious alien race the tau In the jungles of the Dolorosa Coil, a coalition of alien tau and human deserters have waged war upon the Imperium for countless years. Fresh Imperial Guard forces from the Arkhan Confederates are sent in to break the stalemate and annihilate the xenos. But greater forces are at work, and the Confederates soon find themselves broken and scattered. As they fight a desperate guerrilla war, their only hope may lie in the hands of a disgraced commissar, hell-bent on revenge.
Peter Fehervari is the best Black Library author, and this might be his best book. Compelling characters with relatable flaws and absolutely drenched in the best grim dark writing there is. Fire Caste isn't about an upstart xenos race, it's about the journies of men and women finding Thunderground, and the planet Phaedra is about the worst rock one could find to die on.
Peter Fehervari comes at the Warhammer 40K universe from an unusual angle rooted in horror rather than space opera. Fire Caste is a brutally horrific story in which the reader really feels the terror of chaos. Despite the title, the focus is not on the tau, who feature more as antagonists than protagonists, but on Imperial forces. Very well-written, above the usual standards of Warhammer novels.
