This is a very small, lightweight camera. But for its size, it has an impressive design. It's compact and works great as a waterproof, durable camera. The Olympus' waterproof function lasts far longer than other brands I've tried, and still hasn't leaked to this day. Its photos are certainly not professional quality, but they are very good. The video quality, however, is extremely lacking. The videos often turn out pixelated, and seem to have a very low frame rate (thus making the video appear choppy). Apart from its great waterproof capabality, the camera's features, for the most part, are below average. The zoom is extremely limited, and almost pititful (3x optical). The nighttime mode on the camera actually comes with a fairly good flash that goes about 10 feet or so maximum. However, one control that I do like is the focus settings on this camera. Autofocus, Macro, and even Supermacro are all included on this camera, so it allows people to be versatile in the different subjects that they photograph. Now that this camera has dropped in price a bit, I do believe that it is a relatively good buy for $100.Read full review
If you're serious about your photography, I'd look away now; chances are this is not the camera for you. If however you're an active person who needs a camera that can cope with the stresses of an outdoor lifestyle while still returning decent images then this camera is a gem. Being waterproof to 10feet, shock and dust proof has some real advantages. I've taken ours skiing in the morning, to the beach at lunch and snorkelling in the evening, and it worked flawlessly in all three environments. The pictures it returns are vibrant and sharp, although photography in strong sunlight is quite challening with this camera. If I had to identify any faults, it would probably have to be the zoom. The built in 3x optical zoom quite often left me wanting, however I appreciate that to make the unit world+dog proof, you have to make sacrifices, and I would take the rugged portability of this unit every time (I have an SLR for when I need composure/quality over spontanaity). The software load from Olympus is reasonable. You get a basic picture management utility which also handily keeps the camera firmware up to date as well. Finally, inclusion of the microSD to XD adaptor card with this was a long overdue stroke of genius, as it allows you to get high capacity cards withoout breaking the bank!Read full review
I bought this camera for my 9 year old son for Christmas. He is all boy (translate to tough on fragile technology) and enrolled in 4-H photography which means he needs to pull together a display of 10 photos he has taken over the last year. Of course the first feature he figured out (that Mom didn't even think about) was how to make videos of himself singing or demonstrating how to blast off bottle caps. We went to Costa Rica on vacation for a week over New Year and he kept the camera in his packpack or pants pocket the whole time. I downloaded his pictures yesterday and they look great. He's also figured out how to use some of the built in features (backgrounds you can add to photos) that would not necessarily appeal to me. His older sister is jealous of the quality of camera he has. Great choice for a rough and tumble novice.Read full review
I bought one of these for use at work and took many tens of thousands of photos with it, in cold and hot,in rain, filth, and underwater (when I'd take it on my fishing trips. Finally the view-screen blacked out after three years. I'd also dropped it countless times. The first one performed so well I just bought another one without hesitation. I especially like the LED for taking extreme close-up shots in shady spots, and the powerful optical+digital zoom is awesome. The shakiness compensator works exceptionally well. One negative is that the flash is located in such a way as to be covered by your knuckle, unless you're mindful to avoid it; and the other irritating feature is that the digital zoom setting defaults to being "off" changing batteries. Both minor irritations. Battery life isn't great, but it's not terrible either. I was getting about 150-200 photos oer battery when new, and that tapered down to about 60-80 after they were a couple years old.Read full review
I bought this camera because I received an used one as a gift and already had accessories for it, although I'm very satisfied with this cam and its functions. I have no experience as a photographer, so I'd just say that this is a very easy-to-use camera for a novice, it gives a very good quality pics, and -if you want to- you can take a little time to learn how to improve your performance in taking good photos. I love its lightness and that I can carry it with me everywhere, not as professional cams so huge.
