The only other Ace Combat game I've ever played was the first one for the PlayStation. It was impressed with the look and feel of the game. Ace Combat 5 effectively helps me to relive the same enjoyment I had playing the first game. AC5 does a fantastic job of putting you in the pilot's seat of a fighter jet. The realism is astounding. Plane models look just like real jets, with good detail and believable movement. There are multiple viewpoints available both inside the cockpit and out that can be adjusted. The landscapes in certain missions are stunning to see from 2000 feet in the air. Finally, instant replays with adjustable angles appear after the completion of a mission (or in the event of the player's untimely death). They're reminiscent of the cool-looking replays in Gran Turismo 3. The music is movie-quality and suits whatever action is taking place. As for sound effects, I don't think they could have been any better. For example, the farther away you are from an enemy when it's destroyed the longer the sound from the explosion takes to reach your ears. If possible, use a 5.1 stereo system with AC5. It sounds awesome. There's a nice variety of missions, and none are excessively long. Once the campaign mode is complete you can replay any mission from that mode singularly. With 50 models of jets to unlock and use there's plenty of reason to keep playing. As if all these pros weren't enough, AC5's story isn't bad either. How rare to witness a well told, positive moral in a video game. Communication between pilots during missions adds character depth and makes the gameplay more involving. Some players have complained about the audio chatter being annoying but I didn't find it bothersome. At it's core Ace Combat 5 is a game with heart. I wholly recommend it.Read full review

If you like (or love) Air-Combat style games you WILL love this one! I Love the fact that Ace Combat 5 is a little bit different than Ace Combat 4 was in some ways (I HATE when a sequal game is exactly like or too much like the previous version, that is sooo borring and a waste of money!). Also there are a few more missions in AC5 than what AC4 had to offer which is a bonus. And there are also two fun ways to play AC5 (Storyline mode and Arcade mode, Arcade mode has 4 different outcomes depending upon which mmissions you select to play). In Storyline mode some of the missions are very difficult (even on the easy and very easy settings) which makes you want to sit there and try and try and try again (nobody likes a game that's too easy anyway!). Also you can purchase some planes in the game that werent available in AC4 and you can carry a lot more missles in AC5 than AC4. Arcade mode has some relatively easy missions and some that are almost impossible, almost that is! You'd enjoy this game and spend plenty of time on it, it's definatly worth buying!, the ONLY bad things are that some missions are very, very hard, and the storyline mode is wayyyy to wordy, corny, stupid and cliche' (which IS VERY typical of Jap-made games due to the fact that they really always lose way too much in the translation) but at least you CAN skip all of the usless garbage cut-sceenes and skip right to the action unlike some other games where you are forced to watch the drivel! But other than that it's a great, fun, very addictive game!, I ONLY rated it a "good" (4 out of 5) because I have yet to find ANY game on ANY system ever worth giving a 5 rating!Read full review
Ace combat 5 for the ps2 is and inpovment over AC04 simply because its has a lot more aircraft to choose from which makes it fun gives it more replay value. and the mission are more longer. you still have the same basic setup when it comes to flying the aircraft and when you go on mission you choose your team mates aircarft and give them inflight commands. agian something new not found in AC04.Ok now the graphics i think Namco did a good job on AC05.The aircraft do look realistic for a 9 year system again this goes to show you that the ps2 is still going strong after nine years. Ac05 usung war the planes do have more detail in them wich is important if your a fan of these beautiful flying machines like i am F-14' F-18 Hornet and so on. I will say this and you probably all ready know if you what to go to the next level in the ace combat series and i am not talking about the AceCombat Zero you gone to have to get a next gen console like the Xbox360... for the latest game but all and all a good game for replay value...four****star....my next review will be the ACombat balken war.....thanksRead full review
It’s an Awesome Game but -possibly- not as good as AC4. Nevertheless, it's a wonderful addition to the AC family! -The Good -The Well-Suited (and funny at the right times) Dialogue -The Diverse Selection of Aircraft -The Beautiful Music -The Dramatic Cutscenes (laced in and out of the gameplay) -The Beautiful Graphics -The Recognizable Voices and Personalities of Your Fellow Pilots -The Awesome Gameplay -The Bad -The Unspecific Mission Objectives -Too much cussing. -The Summary -This is another wonderful addition to the Ace Combat family! I rented this game recently and thought, “Wow, with Ace Combat 4 being such a hit, I doubt this one will be as good.” Boy, was I wrong! Anyway, this game is similar to Ace Combat 4 (also, see my Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies review), you complete various missions, each taking you one step closer to defeating the Yukes (the enemy). There are many different mission, ranging from destroying Para-tanks, to shooting down enemy aircraft. There are many planes to choose from, and you must also have planes for you squad too (so keep at least four around). That concludes this review. - thepokesonRead full review
