About this product

Product Information

Funny and poignant, this 2001 Newbery Honor novel captures life in a quirky Southern town as Opal and her mangy dog, Winn-Dixie, strike up friendships among the locals. (Ages 8 and up) The summer Opal and her father, the preacher, move to Naomi, Florida, Opal goes into the Winn-Dixie supermarket--and comes out with a dog. A big, ugly, suffering dog with a sterling sense of humor. A dog she dubs Winn-Dixie. Because of Winn-Dixie, the preacher tells Opal ten things about her absent mother, one for each year Opal has been alive. Winn-Dixie is better at making friends than anyone Opal has ever known, and together they meet the local librarian, Miss Franny Block, who once fought off a bear with a copy of WAR AND PEACE. They meet Gloria Dump, who is nearly blind but sees with her heart, and Otis, an ex-con who sets the animals in his pet shop loose after hours, then lulls them with his guitar. Opal spends all that sweet summer collecting stories about her new friends and thinking about her mother. But because of Winn-Dixie or perhaps because she has grown, Opal learns to let go, just a little, and that friendship--and forgiveness--can sneak up on you like a sudden summer storm. Recalling the fiction of Harper Lee and Carson McCullers, here is a funny, poignant, and utterly genuine first novel from a major new talent.

  • Excellent book for ANY 3rd or 4th grader!

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo is more often than not LOVED by both boys and girls. As an educator, I know that when a child (as so adults) loves a book, he/she is going to be more inclined to read more often. Most children will gravitate towards certain authors and opt to choose books written by their favorite authors. My son read this last year in the third grade and LOVES this author. Another great story by Kate DiCamillo is "The Tales of Desperado". It is no shock that Because of Winn-Dixie is a Newberry Medal book! An adorable story about the friendship between a girl and a dog- A TRUE WINNER- you cannot go wrong!

  • Because of Winn-Dixie

"Because of Winn-Dixie" by Kate DiCamillo, a 2001 Newbery Honor book, tells a heartwarming story about love, friendship and tolerance. Main characters of the realistic fiction book are Opal Buloni, a 10-year-old girl, and Winn-Dixie, the dog she has found in the town grocery store. Opal has just moved to Naomi, Florida with her preacher father. Her mother left them seven years ago. Because of Winn-Dixie, Opal makes new friends. Among them are Gloria Dump, a kind old lady called a witch by children, Miss Franny Block, a librarian who loves to tell stories, and Otis, a pet shop worker who plays music to animals. These quirky characters are part of the charm of the chapter book. "Because of Winn-Dixie" appeals to children in 4th grade through 7th grade.

  • Because of Winn-Dixie-SUPER BOOK (my daughter says so!)

My daughter loved this book. She said it had really fascinating details that made the story come alive. She just finished this book last night and wants to read it again and again. Her 5th grade teacher recommended this book to her. As a parent, I like that this book has more substance than those that just cater to simpler subjects. I feel that this book made an impression on her in a positive way-not to knock Captain Underpants series but I like that she has enjoyed something not so silly too. She said she this book is higher on her book rating list than Captain Underpants now. Yay!

  • Absolutely love!

I bought this for another person and she absolutely loves it. The book looks brand new and she hasn't put it down.
