    Happy computer, just add RAM

    Upgrading RAM gives the computer breathing room to process, same with onboard graphics adapters (video) which share RAM. It also saves wear and tear on hard drive being forced to use swap file. It's my understanding a hard drive writes at half the speed it reads, so when your RAM is full and needs to write to swap, that's the reason hard drives thrash. Such was the case of my trusty laptop, that had 2GB of RAM and shared with video. I upgraded it to 4GB and while Windows 32-bit can only use 3GB of it, 64-bit and Linux use every bit. Another thing, many times laptops have dual-channel memory but only one RAM stick! You need a matching pair but performance again skyrockets. So when it comes to RAM, buy new, quality RAM and enjoy better performance and save yourself a lot of grief.
