About this product

Product Information

This controversially erotic film from New Zealand established screenwriter-director Jane Campion as a universally recognized talent. Holly Hunter stars as Ada, a mute 19th-century woman sent to New Zealand in an arranged marriage with a patriarchal landowner (Sam Neill). She brings along her daughter, Flora (Anna Paquin), and tries to also bring her beloved piano, much to the consternation of her new husband, who abandons the piano on a beach. Artistically and emotionally frustrated, Ada finds herself experiencing an erotic awakening when Baines (Harvey Keitel), an illiterate settler covered with Maori tattoos, rescues her piano, buys it from her husband, then strikes a strange bargain with Ada that gradually leads to her sexual awakening--and to an explosive confrontation.Jaw-droppingly beautfiul with its purple and green palette of untamed New Zealand scenery, THE PIANO is both a ravishing love story and a psychosexual fairy tale on a par with WUTHERING HEIGHTS and JANE EYRE. Featuring a haunting piano score by Michael Nyman and brilliant performances, THE PIANO is a masterpiece, considered one of the best films of the 1990s.

Haunting portrayal of the constraints of fixed marriages and travel to unknown lands for early 19th century mute woman with child. Film is full of surprising.

  • A Strange, Award Winning Story

If you have ever seen Holly Hunter in movies before, this is nothing like any previous performance. No Southern accent, no weird voice. She is a 19th Century speechless woman, Ada Mc Grath, who is sent to New Zealand with her daughter Flora (Anna Paquin) and her beloved piano to marry a landowner named Stewart (Sam Neill). The problems begin when Stewart does not arrive on time to pick up Ada at the beach. Then he abandons the piano on the beach because it is too heavy to carry to the house some miles away. He doesn't understand Ada at all in spite of her note making on a tablet that she wears around her neck and the constant pleadings of Flora. Ada pines away for the piano until Stewart leaves on a business trip. She finally implores their neighbor George Baines (Harvey Keitel) to ...

  • The Piano

Set in the mid 1800s, this movie is about Ada, who decided to stop speaking as a child, and is married off by her father to a man living in the New Zealand forest. She travels there with her daughter and her most beloved possession -- her piano. Her new spouse doesn't understand her need for the piano and heartlessly leaves it on the beach, unwilling to pay porters to carry it to their home, some distance away. The piano is Ada's way of communicating so, without it, she is truly mute. Supervising the porters who carry the rest of her things to her new home is George, a Scottsman who lives in the forest. Ada seeks him out to take her back to the beach to check on the piano. While she plays out her frustration on the piano, still on the beach but undamaged, her daughter romps and ...
