This player did not read any discs of any type when I received it. After searching for a firmware update that was needed years ago, I found links that were identified as corrupted and unable to download. A chat box popped open and the support was helpful but didn't solve the problem. Move on to You Tube: There are a few excellent repair solutions. I have experience with electronics and machine functions. IF YOU DON'T, DON'T TRY THIS. I dared to unplug the machine, open the cover, and follow the videos. NOT EASY. There is a repair center to contact for Sony. The HDMI hookup did not have sound on my tv. I hooked up the red-blue-green cables. Input on the tv set to composite instead of the alternate HDMI. The player is AWESOME. The technology is 15 years old so don't expect the navigation to be simple. Don't buy it unless you have the remote. Keep a list of discs you put in the 400 slots.Read full review

The Disc Explore feature is terrible on this model It does not allow you to use the up or down arrows to stroll for the DVD you are searching for. IT only allows you to use a number input to move around the Disc EXPLORER. If you do not know what slot you loaded it in GOOD LUCK. In my opinion the DVP-CX985 DISC EXPLORE 100% better. The only drawback with the DVP-CX985 is that there is no HDMI output but he compone outputs work fine for me.

This is one of the few products left that allows you to put most, if not all of your DVD'S where they can be immediately accessed. A few caveats. Make sure that it has had the firmware updated. When I first put my discs in it read less than half of 180. Second it is better if it comes with a remote. The replacements run 15 to 25, and they do the job, but aren't perfect. Lastly, even after the firmware update it didn't read all my DVD'S, one tv series it didn't read am entire season, but I've got over 150 ready to go. You can either use the internal virtual keyboard or plug in an old pc keyboard which allows you to put the name of the disc in the system. Takes time for those that don't load automatically, but it's worth it.

SONY's "video juke box" has always been a bit of a hassle to set up and use. It can take hours to manually type in disc titles that don't automatically read in - and most of them do NOT. But once you've got it all installed running, it's fun to pull up music, movies or photos on demand. That's were this product shines. I've had one of these since 2006, and when it finally gave up a few weeks ago I immediately replaced it. Glad to have my juke box back - but I'm STILL keying disc titles in manually.

Like this product , very convenient and excellent on storage , sound and clarity however I wish that it had shuttle capability to automatically play the next disc or program the amount to be played , however I'm pleased and preparing to purchase the blu-ray as well fir my blu-ray collection but overall it's a great product that I would refer to any one who has a media collection and looking for organization and space , Godspeed

I own 2 of these as well as a Sony 400 disc Blu ray player. These are awesome and amazing machines however, I have stopped using all of them because after approximately 5 years of use my primary dvd player I was using began to malfunction. It wasn't reading discs properly and some it wouldn't read at all. I figured the lens needed to be cleaned so I took all 400 discs out so I could move the unit to take the casing off and take it apart to clean the lens. During this process I found out somehow the player had cut crescent shape gouges into the play surface of approximately 135 of the discs. None of them with this gouge would play properly on any player anymore and many of them are hard to find and out of print. Use at your own risk.

I purchased the Sony DVP-CX995V To replace two earlier Sony models containing my 600+hundred disc collection of music and DVD's that melted with the Sony Multi-Disc Changers a house fire. The unit is working well though I only have a few DVD's to place in it at this time. The Sony does a better job playing DVDs when compared to my Visio Blue-ray player which does not upscale the DVD video signals to 1080P,the SONY does. Being able to enter the Movie/music name/data via a PS2 Keyboard unlike the current iteration Sony blue-ray (way too many) BIG BUCK$$$ changer. The Sony HDMI video output appears sharper than it's A/V line-out output on my 47" flat screen TV, the sharpness judgment is subjective from watching the same DVD via each signal source... Probably more noticeable on TV's above 55 inches... The remote with slide switch for selecting 3 separate function type/levels takes practice, lots of Buttons on the unit and remote and lots of output signal type choices. A good purchase and one I will continue to use with my planned home theater using 4 Adcom GFA555 audio power amps for the 6 main channels driving 4 pair of Bose 901 speakers and 2 as yet to be decided sub-woofers...Now for a Receiver...Read full review
This CD/DVD juke box plays discs just like any other player, except you can load up to 400 CD/DVDs in it to play any disc from the comfort of your armchair (with the original remote). Without the proper remote you have to change discs using the front panel buttons. I have read poor reviews of the system because of a couple little things that bothered some people, but for me they are non issues. I keep a separate Word file log of which discs are in which slot number. Then I just refer to my log sheet to find the title and slot # I need to play the disc. Then I can go directly from, say, slot 24 to slot 275 from my the comfort of my sofa using the proper remote. This Sony carousel has played ALL my home made DVDs no problem. Unit is larger than most audio/video players. The depth of the player could be an issue, at 21 inches, it sticks out a bit from the shelf it sits on. Other than that, I love this machine for it's ability to hold so many CD/DVDs and it has a HDMI out your TV that works great.I would have to be pretty picky to complain about what this machine can not do, when everything it is built to do it does so well.Read full review

I have two of these already and am shopping for a third one. You can gang three together maximum. The remotes have a switch in them to control number 1, 2 or 3. I sent my first on back because it would lose the titles randomly. They upgraded it. Both of my changes lose the title of the first DVD, no getting around it. You do have to be very careful when removing DVD's to watch elsewhere, if someone plays a movie in the player with some missing it will lose titles randomly. It is a bitch to enter all that back in. So we do not play from the player that does not have all the DVD's in it. I have over 800 movies and this is the very best way to store and play them. I agree with others when they say it is slow between movies, but it is faster than changing them out on any other player. No two sided feature sucks also, I put up with that when I had LD, the got a duplex LD player. I would recommend this machine whole heartedly.Read full review
This is a great player for the price! I have 350 DVD's in my collection and they were just getting too much to store in the house. Now I can put all of them in this player and store their cases in the garage out of site. The player works flawlessly and was easy to setup. However, there are two things I dislike about it. One, it automatically starts playing from the last point you left off. Now on one hand I can see how this would be great if you only can watch part of a movie, but I rarely if ever only watch part of a movie so it's a bit of a pain to wait for it to get to a point so you can stop it and go to the movie you want to watch. Two, it's a LOT of work to set it up with the titles and genre. I can see why they put a keyboard attachment in the machine. So far I've put in around 120 DVD's and it's taken me probably the better part of 2 or 3 hours (of course spread out over a couple of days). Some of the movies I have it did recognize and filled in the info but the majority it did not. It IS time consuming to put all that info into the machine but I think it will be worth it in the end. The best way to do this is to write down the titles of the movies and the slot you put it in as you load the player, then you can refer to the list while inputting the titles and it goes much faster. Third, it is a little slow accessing the DVD's but that doesn't really bother me too much, just gives me time to settle in with my popcorn and diet coke! ;-) Oh yeah and also make sure you watch the measurements. It is a large machine and I am sure it won't fit in many of the TV stands out there. Overall I really like the quality of the picture and the performance of this machine. You can sort by title (yea!) and genre to make it easy to find certain movies! You can also create folders so you can split up your movies and CD's. I was impressed with the abilities this machine has to offer as far as organizing the titles. If you have a large DVD collection OR large CD collection I would highly recommend this player for the price. I think I paid around $250 for this on ebay. Great buy considering I paid close to that for the DVD storage shelving units I had been using to store my collection! It's also nice not to have to pick a movie and load the player, watch the move then put the movie away on the shelf. heh.. it's also harder for your friends to come over and say "Oh I love this movie, Can I borrow it??" Sorry..blockbuster is down the street!! lolRead full review
