Conn 88H Trombone Family
Once upon a time, I was a pretty good college player. Now I am a collector. I have a lot of trombones and euphoniums that I fuss with and compare. The basic 88H deserves its decades long reputation as a great "symphonic" trombone. It is free blowing with noticeable differences in response when the F attachment is connected. The horn works beautifully at any volume. I would not call the 88H the ideal jazz blaster, however. It's just too big though excellent and/or determined players can do great things with any piece of tubing. 88H has become a big family. I have to presume that the open wrap and high priced valve varieties have more uniform response in F and that "thin" and "gold brass" bells give subtle differences of timbre. I can tell you that the slide with the changeable lead pipes can make the horn into different animals with more or less resistance and/or more or less easy response in upper or lower registers. As with any trombone or euphonium, choices in mouthpiece make an enormous difference in tone and response. One cannot completely characterize the behavior of any instrument independently of the mouthpiece. For example, Besson and Yamaha professional euphoniums can be made to sound nearly the same with appropriately chosen mouthpieces. And that 88H can be made easier to maneuver in the higher registers and given a brighter, jazzier sound with a shallower cup and a more restrictive back bore. For a relatively inexperienced player, the 88H in about any trim is likely a safe bet, but expect to spend time finding a mouthpiece that works for you. The right one can be a revelation. And be sure to learn to breathe properly. Better players will have to test drive a range of horns before a choice can be made. Great players can easily tell the difference between individual otherwise identical horns and will have a clear preference for one sample over another. I personally love my 88H: pretty sound, easy to play.

Great Franken horn
Product came earlier than expected. Had some friends play horn. They liked it. They said i sounded great on it. I'm going to make it a convertible, so lots of use Franken short for Frakenstein
