About this product

Product Information

A four-million-year-old black monolith is discovered on the moon, and the government (while hiding the situation from the public) sends a team of scientists on a fact-finding mission. Eighteen months later, another team is sent to Jupiter in a ship controlled by the perfect HAL 9000 computer to further investigate the giant object--but on this trip something goes terribly wrong. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY is a masterpiece of filmmaking. Director and (with Arthur C. Clarke) co-screenwriter Stanley Kubrick has created a visual and aural spectacle that stands as one of the greatest achievements ever put on celluloid. The film begins with the "Dawn of Man" segment, about the evolution of apes, and then ventures into the future, taking a look at what the world might be like in the first year of the 21st century. Kubrick's film is a triumph of technological storytelling, with stunning sets and a brilliant, overwhelming soundtrack. Long dialogue-free scenes sparkle with indelible images backed by powerful orchestral music, culminating in an unforgettable, inscrutable tale of birth and rebirth, human evolution and artificial intelligence, the past and the future.

Loved the aliens and spaceships. Not too kitschy.

Film site of Devl's Tower, Wy. was a brilliant choice.

  • My all time favorite.....

This became my all time favorite movie when I first saw it at the local theater way back in the last century! I have seen it countless times since and almost every time I notice something new. I still have my worn VHS copy but since my VCR died of old age I have been going into 2001 ASO withdrawal! Now I can see it again any time I want. 2001 A Space Odyssey set the bar very high for all the space adventures since.

  • A 'Top Ten' movie - a true classic!

I recently attended a short lecture by an expert of the cinema - Marc Lapadula / Yale University. His topic was The Three Greatest Films in American Cinema and 2001: a space odyssey is one. This reintroduced me to the great film that I realized wasn't in my library and I had to have it and watch it again. This is a great flick and brought back a lot of memories!!

  • Only complaint is the movie is issued in letterbox and not 16:9 wide-screen. MGM and a few others were notorious for doing this on early releases.

  • A Must See for every Sc-Fi Fan

I saw this movie when it was first shown in the local theater in 1968. Stanley Kubrick brought out the best in Arthur C. Clarke when they worked together to make this movie. When it was released it was so far advanced technologically that many people hated the movie. However true Sci-Fi fans loved it. The way Clarke brought space to life in this movie was years ahead of it's time. You have to remember that in 1968 only a hand full of humans had ever even been in space, let alone established colonies or built ships large enough for anyone to live in. 2001 is one of the best space movies ever made and I highly recommend all Sci-Fi fans to add this one to their collection.
