A very special map of Massachusetts
Well, what can I say? It's not easy to put into words just exactly how the map of Massachusetts and I got together.. For some affairs, words just won't suffice. Anyway, it was a late evening in mid May, a Thursday night I remember. A light mist was falling, and the fragrance of the earth awakening after a long winter nap, filled my nostrils. I could hear frogs in the distance. Water gurgled in the drain next to the sidewalk. I had just locked my bicycle up to a tree, and was heading into my favorite, local watering hole, when suddenly, a glinting, reflecting light caught my eye through the window of the bar. I stopped and looked hard through the glass. I couldn't believe it, but there, just inside the first booth beside the door, was the most amazing atlas and gazetteer I had ever ... Well, what can I say? It's not easy to put into words just exactly how the map of Massachusetts and I got together.. For some affairs, words just won't suffice. I couldn't believe it, but there, just inside the first booth beside the door, was the most amazing atlas and gazetteer I had ever seen, lying flat on the table, with some guy running his meaty hand up and down it's spine, and talking a mile a minute to the barmaid, spitting a little as he talked, all over the soft, shimmery, light reflecting cover of little Miss Massachusetts (that's how I instantly began thinking of the atlas and gazetteer of Massachusetts in my mind). My soul had never before had to entertain two emotions at one time, but there I was feeling weak in the knees and kind of soft, and squishy inside, staring at that beautiful atlas; and at the same time my blood was pumping hard, and I began to snort like a raging bull, my upper extremities reddening, and pulsing, as I envisioned myself goring the hapless dope sitting behind the window idly touching Miss Massachusetts, the gazetteer of my dreams! Surely he was not worthy to turn her rigid pages, and stuff her down under the seat of his car when he was through with her! But- what could I do? She was not my atlas and gazetteer; not yet anyway! I needed a plan, and quick. I was starting to attract stares from people inside and outside the bar. I took a quick glance around, and noticed I was in the flower bed outside the bar window, my legs crumpled under me like wet noodles, and my face redder than a baboons butt in heat. If I didn't get out of there soon, someone would no doubt call the mind police from the psych ward, and have me hauled off to some rubber-padded room downtown -pronto. It was time to move. In no time I was in the door of the bar, brushing mud and wet leaves out of the cuffs of my cordoroys, and looking sidelong over my shoulder towards Mister Meat hands in the first booth. Damn if I didn't know him! Peasley Peltz! His mother was my bus driver when I was in kindergarten! He was six or seven years older than me, a big oaf, and a local fool! A question immediately ran through my mind, 'how on earth did he ever wind up with such a FOX of an atlas and gazetteer? How, how, how?' I didn't have much time to contemplate the answer to my own question, when up the aisle heaved a mountain of flesh covered in flannel, stopped at Peasley's booth, and with a shudder of quivering cellulite, squeezed into the seat opposite him. It was his mother- Mrs. Peltz! My old bus driver! -AARRGGHHHH!! The woman, if you could call her that, had the temperment of a fire breathing dragon with a thumb tack stuck in her rear. At least she did when she was driving that old bus! I quickly jumped to the open barstool opposite their table, put my back to them, and hunched up my shoulders to hide myself until I could figure out what to do. I ordered a draught and began to listen in on them. "Ma," said Peasley, "pull my finger."
