  • River Out of Eden reviewed by Jim S.

Extremely simplistic in it's arguments for the step-by-step "random" development of the vertebrate eye. Although he is quoting the research of others, I would have thought he might have qualified the conditions on which the research assumptions were based. To assume that a photoreceptive cell is a given, and justifying natural selection from there on, is skipping some of the more difficult parts of the puzzle. For example, the chemistry that would have had to take place in the develoment of the photoreceptive cell in the first place. Mr. Dawkins should read a little more of Michael Behe so that he gains a better understanding of the complexities involved in the evolutionary processes. Or at least be somewhat more critical of his sources.

  • Surprisingly good read!

Richard Dawkins' reputation as a screaming, radical atheist (at least among the people I'm often around) is completely undeserved. This book is simply a cogent, well-written explanation of what evolution is and how it works. I'm halfway through the book and so far religion has not come up once, except in a peripheral way. Best of all, you don't have to have a degree in biology to understand what Dawkins is saying. People who want to know more about evolution should read this book. People who don't believe in evolution should definitely read this book, if only to know what it is they don't believe (although once they do read it they will probably wonder what all the fuss was about).
