About this product

Product Information

Called "everything a twentieth century war memoir could possibly be" by The New York Times, this national bestseller by Colonel David H. Hackworth presents a vivid and powerful portrait of a life of patriotism. From age fifteen to forty David Hackworth devoted himself to the US Army and fast became a living legend. In 1971, however, he appeared on television to decry the doomed war effort in Vietnam. With About Face , he has written what many Vietnam veterans have called the most important book of their generation. From Korea to Berlin, from the Cuban missile crisis to Vietnam, Hackworth's story is that of an exemplary patriot, played out against the backdrop of the changing fortunes of America and the American military. It is also a stunning indictment of the Pentagon's fundamental misunderstanding of the Vietnam conflict and of the bureaucracy of self-interest that fueled the war.

  • ABOUT FACE THE ODYSSEY OF AN AMERICAN WARRIOR

I originally read this book when it first came out in the late 1980's and then closely followed its author's career as a correspondent for Time Magazine. He featured largely in identifying some senior officers who were wearing medals that they had never been awarded as well as being responsible for outing some stunning military lies and deceptions. He knew the Army inside and out beginning his career as a 16 year old who lied about his age, joined the Army and found himself in occupied Italy at the end of WWII. He became one of the soliders who came home and was promptly tossed out of the military to make a life in the civilian world. Recalled to serve in Korea he was horried by what he saw happening there and showed himself to be a hero and a soldiers soldier as well as a brilliant ...

  • History Repeats!

Awesome book from one of the Nation's most decorated warriors. An older book, but still relevant and very timely. It would appear that those who do not know history, really are doomed to repeat it!
