    Alternative Thinking

By presenting and discussing what books were not selected into the canon that is in the Bible as we know it today the book offers alternate, and additive, views of the historic Jesus and early Christianity. Not presuming itself a last word, it is rather an introduction to those "discarded" gospels (the Nag Hammadi Scriptures found in Egypt) and compels one's further reading of topics covered (Gospel of Thomas, of Phillip, etc.). Citations are given. Factual information is well-founded. Dates provide clear time perspective. Requires some knowledge of classical Roman history, scripture and church history--and receptiveness to new ideas.

  • Just as much history of the gospels as inturpretations

Much of this book is based on th history of th gospels and arguments between early gnostic leaders like Valentinus and th bishop Ireneus. But within these arguments are examples of gnostic teachings and commentary on the interpretations of them. In other words, it explains the gospels through dialog and history as opposed to a direct translation of the gospels with commentary afterwards to simplify and interpret their meaning. For a better note: The history is very intersting and she is very unbiased towards the opposing Orthodox Catholic teachings and their attacks on the gnostic gospels. She presents commentary, evidence towards the validity of both arguments, and leaves the reader to decide which standpoint they themselves will choose based on valid points from both parties. It is very ...

  • Learning the Truth?!.

Finally with books like the Gnostic Gospels the public and believers alike can for the first time learn how a faith came into being. Its to bad that the churches have not lead the effort to lift the fog of history so the world could finally understand the how and why of this faith. As an author to two different histories dealing with New York State's Finger Lakes I bow to how Elaine Pagel has made know in simple words the beginning of the Christian Faith.

  • To the point,,though not alot of gnostic bible quotes

I was interested in learning about gnostic beliefs. She was interesting to read though not so simple that it was an easy read. I had several quotes regarding her books in a fiction I was reading by james rollins "map of bones" which was a wonderful book. He used her as a source so I thought good enough for him, good enough for me to start. Would be interested in the gospel by mary, haven't read my other pagels book about peter (I believe) and can't seem to lacate it which is a gripe, since it has the gospel according to him in it. Overall intelligent, and lucid.

  • Know the Gnostics

This educated and informed treatment of such a sensitive issue is masterfully done. The manner in which Ms. Pagels introduces evidence which runs contrary to traditional Christian beliefs is skillful and gentle. The author makes no attempt to vilify anyone's religious convictions, nor does she presume to de-proselytize the reader. The text is written on a college level; expect complex sentence structuring and frequent points of reference. The book is a must for those who seek to be better informed about the turmoil within the early church and the eventual evolution of modern Christianity.
