About this product

Product Information

This first book in the series is a great combination of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Terrible Two series, and is perfect for fans of Roald Dahl. The best con man in the Midwest is only ten years old. Tom, a.k.a., the Great Brain, is a silver-tongued genius with a knack for turning a profit. When the Jenkins boys get lost in Skeleton Cave, the Great Brain saves the day. Whether it's saving the kids at school, or helping out Peg-leg Andy, or Basil, the new kid at school, the Great Brain always manages to come out on top-and line his pockets in the process.

  • I love this book, second only to Where the Red Fern Grows!

I had read three of the sequels to my 4th grade class last year. This year I decided to start the year with the first book in the series. Tom's (the Great Brain's) hilarious shenanigans in swindling his fellows out of their pennies (116 years ago) and best toys is superseded when he finds out that his little brother John was trying to help peg leg Andy "do himself in." Tom puts his great brain to work on Andy's dilemma. Andy's father had called him "plum useless" because he couldn't do his chores. He was also plum useless as a kid because he could no longer run and play since losing his leg to gangrene. Tom does come up with a solution, called WORK. Tom works like a saint to bring Andy's chore and play skills up to speed. Great discussions followed regarding suicide and work. It ...

  • An Excellent Read!

I grew up reading these books, so they hold a special place in my heart. The premise for the book is a boy telling stories about his brother, Tom D, who calls himself "the Great Brain." The Great Brain takes delight in swindeling the other children of Aidenville Utah, and coming up with schemes that land everyone in trouble. The charecters are flawed, but increadibly lovable, and the stories give an insight into the life and culture of small town life in the late 1800's. Kids and adults alike will find themselves laughing at the antics of John D (the narrator and brother to "The Great Brain"), Tom D, and the delightful assortment of characters in these books!

  • Great for boys. Excellent summer reading material. Funny and entertaining

Wonderful book and series! My son is 9, and he is hooked on this series of books. They are funny and entertaining. He has eaten this entire series up. These books have caused him to elevate his interest in longer chapter books. I can't recommend this author, or these books enough. Buy them. You won't regret it!

  • Great book!

I read this in the 5th grade now I’m reading it to my kids. It’s a great book with a lot of fun history lessons.
