A Documentary More Compelling Than Fiction
You've heard it before... trite though it may sound, I give this book TEN stars! I believe that a lot that could be said in reviews, here, has been said in words more eloquent than mine. However I would have to add a number of thoughts here, first and foremost, that a person would be remiss in claiming to truly comprehend the core value of The Titanic disaster without "A Night to Remember" on their bookshelf. Lord's narrative, based primarily on early 1950's survivor interviews, is limited to what was witnessed to have actually happened that night and what was most actually known to have been said, by witnesses, carefully validated for their authenticity, presented in a highly readable style. In my opinion, this is THE reference of all other works on The Titanic disaster. If you ... You've heard it before... trite though it may sound, I give this book TEN stars! In my opinion, this is THE reference of all other works on The Titanic disaster. If you wish to read only one book, this should be the book. If you are starting out anticipating a more broad understanding of the Titanic disaster, Lord's "A Night to Rememebr" should be your FIRST book! Do not be deceived that this book is "only" 159 pages. It only needs to be. Celebrate it! Lord seems to have known that a straight forward, moment by moment description of ONLY what 1950's survivors witnessed that night, was all a reader needed to be hypnotized, and gripped by the events unfolding that night through Lord's straight forward highly readable style. Lord does not insult the reader with unnecessary multi-page suspense interrupting historical trivia, biographies, speculation, or - give me a break - smarmy imaginary love story melodrama. Unlike a certian 1997 over bloated special effects fantasy, with innacuracies of which the director admitted were fictionionalized to serve the plot, this book IS NOT an insulting and time wasting "The Love Boat Sinks" soap opera by any means! It is difficult to communicate how, with Lords narrative style, one will turn the last page of this book confident that one now knows the basic facts of what happened that night, and that by having read simply who was who, what was most likely said, and most likely was done, this will be all that one needs to say with confidence: "I know most all of what could be now known of the facts of what happened the night The Titanic sank." And that any other reading will simply be a tweeking here, and an embellishing there, of "A Night to Remember." I've thought since I first saw the British film based on the book as a six year old back in 1958, [and yes, as a slow reader it took to 61 years to finally get the inspiration to purchase and read the book!] how ironic that the two definitive works, the book and the film, primarily on the subject of the sinking of the Titanic itsself, were the only works that, until recently, did not have the name "Titanic" in their titles! To understand that irony, try reading "A Night to Remember."
