    a compelling classic

    This book is aptly named "The Story" of Christianity. The author introduces the history of Christianity by narrating a story, or a collection of stories. Once you start the first page, it's hard to stop reading it. Starting from the first century Christians through the 20th century, you'll essentially live through the history of Christianity. It reads very easy to the uninitiated, and yet maintains a high level of scholarly excellence. It should satisfy readers at all levels. I've read a few different books on the church history, and to me this one topped all else. There are two volumes of this book: from the early church to the dawn of the reformation, and from the reformation to the 20th century.

    Amazing how early heresy hit the church.

    The Story of Christianity is required reading for my BA in the ministry. Each of the 411 pages are full of information with names and dates of all the major theological debates in the church. Gonzalez gives a brief history of prominent people that were involved with such debates and their outcomes. Careful reading has to take place between chapters to keep track of the dates, but this was necessary to keep the topics easier to understand. It is amazing to see how early after the apostles the church fell into heresy and deception.

    well researched. eye for social/political environment

    Gonzalez tells the story very well. He has a good eye for the political impact on the development of Christianity. He spends a little bit less time on doctrinal issues; it depends on the perspective how important this is. I think it is nice as well, but for that topic Gonzalez has written a triology, so that point is covered else where. The big advantage of Gonzalez is that he is able to take some distance because he not part of Western Europe, where most of the history lies. Easern church gets a little bit less attention. His analysis of politics is quite well researched. Exccellent rating.
