About this product

Product Information

"Brilliant....Each story is a fascinating vignette, and together they they weave the reader through a world where the Moon Lady can grant any wish, where a child, promised in marriage at two and delivered at 12, can, with cunning, free herself; where a rich man's concubine secures her daughter's future by killing herself, and where a woman can live on, knowing she has lost her entire life." WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD A stunning literary achievement, THE JOY LUCK CLUB explores the tender and tenacious bond between four daughters and their mothers. The daughters know one side of their mothers, but they don't know about their earlier never-spoken of lives in China. The mothers want love and obedience from their daughters, but they don't know the gifts that the daughters keep to themselves. Heartwarming and bittersweet, this is a novel for mother, daughters, and those that love them.

Book came in good condition. I just wish the picture represented the product I was getting. The cover of the book I received does not match the cover pictured in the description. I wanted the same cover my mom had when I was a kid in the 90’s/the cover in the image of the product. Oh well, off to thrift stores to find that exact book cover.

Watched the movie many years ago and read the book a long time ago as well. I let a family member borrow it and they never gave it back. Some of the stories frustrated me, but that's just life right? Overall it's a good read.

  • Classic Literature about the American Dream at a price you can afford.

Despite the many years that have passed since this blockbuster created new avenues of oral and written tradition for Americans, it has sustained itself as an all-time classic for people of all colors coming to this country searching for the American Dream, but coming into conflict with parents about not forgetting HOW their families got here. The parents want the memory, the struggles, the sacrifices, their religion, superstitions and values to be honored by a new generation I bought this product to read as part of our book club (Book Banter). I have no personal knowledge of Asian culture; I have little to compare it with, except that my family of Irish and Swedes also came to this country as immigrants, hoping for a better life. This is a book for all people.

  • Joy Luck Club Review

This book was in great and honest condition when received. It's holds the same content as every other published copy and I highly recommend it for it's reasonable price.

  • Sorrow of a soul torn between cultures

This is a book about being between cultures: your parents' one, a strong, ancient, enigmatic, and a surrounding one, also strong, but young and simple-minded. It's written with pain of realization that what your parents have carried for so long, and tried to pass to you, their knowledge, their wisdom, their love - they ways they love you - is draining through the sand and is not recoverable on the personal level. It is painful to read it. The book is a lament. It offers no solutions, but suggest that having this sorrow inside, bearing it through one's life still makes it richer, deeper, and goves one some anchors others can't imagine.
