About this product

Product Information

An unimpeachable classic work in political philosophy, intellectual and cultural history, and economics, The Road to Serfdom has inspired and infuriated politicians, scholars, and general readers for half a century. Originally published in 1944--when Eleanor Roosevelt supported the efforts of Stalin, and Albert Einstein subscribed lock, stock, and barrel to the socialist program-- The Road to Serfdom was seen as heretical for its passionate warning against the dangers of state control over the means of production. For F. A. Hayek, the collectivist idea of empowering government with increasing economic control would lead not to a utopia but to the horrors of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. First published by the University of Chicago Press on September 18, 1944, The Road to Serfdom garnered immediate, widespread attention. The first printing of 2,000 copies was exhausted instantly, and within six months more than 30,000 books were sold. In April 1945, Reader's Digest published a condensed version of the book, and soon thereafter the Book-of-the-Month Club distributed this edition to more than 600,000 readers. A perennial best seller, the book has sold 400,000 copies in the United States alone and has been translated into more than twenty languages, along the way becoming one of the most important and influential books of the century. With this new edition, The Road to Serfdom takes its place in the series The Collected Works of F. A. Hayek. The volume includes a foreword by series editor and leading Hayek scholar Bruce Caldwell explaining the book's origins and publishing history and assessing common misinterpretations of Hayek's thought. Caldwell has also standardized and corrected Hayek's references and added helpful new explanatory notes. Supplemented with an appendix of related materials ranging from prepublication reports on the initial manuscript to forewords to earlier editions by John Chamberlain, Milton Friedman, and Hayek himself, this new edition of The Road to Serfdom will be the definitive version of Hayek's enduring masterwork.

"It takes courage, or something like it, to declare one''s offering ''The Definitive Edition''. . . . Some truths never get old

At a time when the nation is seeing the extremes in both parties heading furiously away from each other, I thought it might be helpful if I were to take a step back and read a few "theory" books from my college recommended reading list, which I neglected 50 years ago. So I read a few liberal and conservative thought pieces. I thought I would know what they would say before I started but in the case of Hayek, I was suprised at how well he laid out his case. I won't try to convince the potential readers of this review of anything except that this is worth your time. Hayek weaves not just economic but also social, political, and historical themes so well that the pages are not as "heavy - laden" as most tomes of the time. As every American generation has to go through the theoretical ...

  • Good history and reference

Well written and researched. A collection, really of Hayek's writings leading to the conclusion that we are indeed on the road to serfdom and have been for many years. Extremely well footnoted and with amplifying remarks by the compiler. The language in some cases is a bit dated but still quite readable- at least for this boomer. Recommended read for anyone who wants to know more about America's unfortunate decision to abandon the principles of our Founding Fathers.

  • One of the best books of all time. U won"t be able to put it down!!!

I read a condensed version from a 1944 readers digest that belonged to my grand mother when i was in grade school in the sixties. Recommended it to Rush Limbaugh back in the eighties. He loved it and has talked about it on air many times. This is on my top five books to read list of all time. If u r a socialist this would hopefully open your eyes. George Orwell was greatly influenced by this book. A must must Must read...Captain Kurk the Political Music Man... CHOW !!! ch

  • A book whos time has come again!

A must read book by anyone who has an inkling of doubt about the insane Keynesian spending being jammed down the throats of the American Taxpayers. This book has come of age again. As most evolutionary thinking, it takes at least 50 years for brilliant thinking to work its magic. For the history buff's, the many forwards, provide ample evidence how Hayek came to write these words of uncommon brilliance. You will be very satisfied by taking time to read his timeless words. You will in the end, come to a better understanding of our past and today.

  • Hayek

This book has been around for a long time...There has been renewed interest in Hayek and his work...I purchased this as a gift for a family member who said he has been wanting to read this for the last 20 years or so...His reading had been on the civil war and other american history books until now...every review I have read highly recommends this book...I purchased a copy for myself recently so look forwar to the read as well...
