A First-Rate Detective Story but an Even Better Love Story-An Account of the Love for Wild Places., "As Jon Krakauer did with Into the Wild, Blehm turns a missing-man riddle into an insightful meditation on wilderness and the personal demons and angels that propel us into it alone." -- Outside magazine "Blehm recounts the search for Morgenson with a thriller's pacing. . . . A potent testament to the enduring power and allure of wild spaces. -- Men's Journal "Part detective story, part sensitive biography and part Park Service procedural, Blehm's book probes the mystery of Morgenson's disappearance. . . . Blehm blends his love of the mountains (he was a competitive snowboarder and winter sports writer for years) with serious journalism skills to produce a deeply layered, meticulously researched, greatly entertaining read." -- San Francisco Chronicle "Just try to put down The Last Season, Eric Blehm's gripping detective story about the disappearance of Sierra super-ranger Randy Morgenson. We couldn't." -- Backpacker "Blehm, a snowboarder and journalist, deftly interweaves the story of Morgenson's lifelong devotion to wilderness with a riveting account of the hunt for him." -- National Geographic Adventure Magazine "Some considered Morganson the Park Service's best backcountry ranger, and when he went missing while on patrol in the summer of 1996, his friends were at first astonished, then suspicious. . . . Blehm ably evokes the world of seasonal backcountry rangers, whom the Park Service slights even as they put in long days protecting the land they manage and coming to the aid of backpackers in trouble." -- Washington Post Book World "[A] compelling picture . . . of the pristine backcountry and the lonely, bittersweet lives of those charged with protecting it. . . . • Exceptional Biography

This is an amazing read. I bought the book because I’d heard about it on radio and was compelled to buy it. Having been a National Park volunteer for nearly 8 years also fueled my fire. The author, who by the way has written mostly for sports magazines and published two sports related books, did a fantastic job with this biography of drawing you into Randy Morgenson’s life without making you sense that anything was contrived or fictionalized for the sake of interest. Eric Blehm gives you quite a view of the life (and death) of this ranger, his immediate family, the lives of other seasonal and permanent rangers, as well as the inner workings of our national parks. The story is quite a page turner that keeps you searching for what happens next. At the conclusion of this saga, I can sum ...

  • This was an amazing book!

I worked for SEKI in the late 90's + early 00's and remember co-workers speaking of "Ranger Randy" and how they hoped he was "somewhere in Mexico drinking cold beers". This book brought ranger Randy to life. It is very well researched and written. It give a great account of his life and relationships he had over the years. This book recounts relationships with people and the lands that he protected. There is also an internal conflict, which is something I think we can all relate to. It took me back to the Summers I spent in the Sierra and higher level supervisors I worked for. My only complaint about this book is the photo/mention of Ranger Nina Wiseman. Besides a breif meeting with him in the early 90's, she was not involved in the search or recovery of his body, yet is mentioned ...

  • Book

This is well detailed. Heard of other disappearances but this one more chilling with all details weighed in.

  • Great Choice!

This book is so interesting, nonfiction, about a park ranger in Sequoia/Yosemite Parks. So great to read about Randy's adventures and the outcome, don't want to put the book down. A must read for everyone!
