Synopsis
From the New York Times bestselling author of Alternate Side, Anna Quindlen's classic reflection on a meaningful life makes a perfect gift for any occasion. "Life is made of moments, small pieces of silver amidst long stretches of tedium. It would be wonderful if they came to us unsummoned, but particularly in lives as busy as the ones most of us lead now, that won't happen. We have to teach ourselves now to live, really live . . . to love the journey, not the destination." In this treasure of a book, Anna Quindlen, the bestselling novelist and columnist, reflects on what it takes to "get a life"--to live deeply every day and from your own unique self, rather than merely to exist through your days. "Knowledge of our own mortality is the greatest gift God ever gives us," Quindlen writes, "because unless you know the clock is ticking, it is so easy to waste our days, our lives." Her mother died when Quindlen was nineteen: "It was the dividing line between seeing the world in black and white, and in Technicolor. The lights came on for the darkest possible reason. . . . I learned something enduring, in a very short period of time, about life. And that was that it was glorious, and that you had no business taking it for granted." But how to live from that perspective, to fully engage in our days? In A Short Guide to a Happy Life, Quindlen guides us with an understanding that comes from knowing how to see the view, the richness in living., #1 New York Times bestselling author Anna Quindlen's classic reflection on a meaningful life makes a perfect gift for any occasion. • Simple advice that never ages

Quindlen divides her life into two parts, before and after, where the dividing line is the death of her mother when Quindlen was 19. She states that before that fateful time, she saw the world in black and white, and after it appeared in Technicolor. She states that knowledge of our own mortality is the greatest fact in our existence. For it means that we are all on a one-way street to the end. Using this as a fundamental premise, Quindlen puts forward what is standard advice, expressed in the simple adage, “get a life.” By this she means that a hard driving focus is often good, but taken too far, can be detrimental in the long run. A recapitulation of the old adage of stopping to smell the roses. Quindlen is not radical in her position, her milder version can be expressed as, “at ...

    • Lot of meaning in a little book.

This is a profound little book. I first heard Anna Quindlen read from it on NPR. It was just after my father died, and her words about what is truly important in life struck me deeply. I immediately went on-line to order a copy of the book. After reading it, I bought several more copies to give to family and friends. This is a book to re-read when we begin to lose our way and start sweating the small stuff again. This gem of a book will get you to focus again on the big picture, and to remember to cherish each day for the miracle it is.

    • Great book

I bought this for my mother for Christmas. She has told me what a wonderful book it is at least four times. She is going to buy some copies and give to her friends. She said it is an easy read and that it is such a wonderful book. I bought this book based on reviews I read from others and I am very happy I could give such a good gift.

    • A Short Guide to a Happy Life

Touching and thought-provoking book. Anna Quindlen is one of my favorite authors. In this book, she shares small biographical snippets that make me feel I know her -- I certainly wish I did! And the photographs really pull at my heart, especially the boardwalk and beach scenes. Thank you, Anna Quindlen.
