About this product

Product Information

This Newbery Honor winner and #1 New York Times bestseller is a beloved modern classic. Hoot features a new kid and his new bully, alligators, some burrowing owls, a renegade eco-avenger, and several extremely poisonous snakes. Everybody loves Mother Paula's pancakes. Everybody, that is, except the colony of cute but endangered owls that live on the building site of the new restaurant. Can the awkward new kid and his feral friend prank the pancake people out of town? Or is the owls' fate cemented in pancake batter? Welcome to Carl Hiaasen's Florida--where the creatures are wild and the people are wilder!

Reviews
"It seems unlikely that the master of noir-tinged, surrealistic black humor would write a novel for young readers. And yet, there has always been something delightfully juvenile about Hiaasen's imagination; beneath the bent cynicism lurks a distinctly 12-year-old cackle. In this thoroughly engaging tale of how middle schooler Roy Eberhardt, new kid in Coconut Cove, learns to love South Florida, Hiaasen lets his inner kid run rampant, both the subversive side that loves to see grown-ups make fools of themselves and the righteously indignant side, appalled at the mess being made of our planet. The story is full of offbeat humor, buffoonish yet charming supporting characters, and genuinely touching scenes of children enjoying the wildness of nature. He deserves a warm welcome into children's publishing."-Booklist "A wonderful tour-de-force."-The Boston Globe "A rollicking, righteous story."-The Miami Herald "You don't have to be a young adult to enjoy it."-The New York Times Book Review "Yes, it is a hoot."-The Washington Post Book World, "It seems unlikely that the master of noir-tinged, surrealistic black humor would write a novel for young readers. • Save the owls!

This is a hot book among middle schoolers right now, and it has been for the last couple of years. Adult environmentalist and writer Carl Hiassen turned to the middle school market on this one, and his book has been wildly successful as a result. The book deals with all the issues kids in middle school face like fitting in and making friends and staying out of trouble, and it also adds in the compounding problem of moving to a new area. However, the book goes a step further and delves into an environmental issue. The boy works to save a colony of burrowing owls at a local construction site, and soon gains an ally. A great book that kids love, and the cover is appealing to all. (As a teacher, I'll take just about any trick to get them hooked on a good book.)

  • Carl Hiaasen keeps you spellbound

Yes, I know . . . a book written for children. But, I just couldn't resist. I absolutely love ANY book written by Carl Hiaasen and have read every one of them! I so needed a Carl Hiaasen 'fix' waiting for his new book to come out that I ordered all three of his books written for children. I knew that they would be mild in 'language', but his 'adult' books are not offensive in the language department, so what the heck. Carl Hiaasen's descriptive, spellbinding books are mesmerizing reading for everyone, but if you by chance live in the Great State of Florida, as I do . . . you will LOVE ALL his books. When you read just one, you will be hooked. I just wish he was more prolific in authoring more books.

  • great read

great read. very interesting. Great for young readers, probably about a grade 5 reading level. Honors it has recieved are well diserved. just short enough to keep young readers attention, but long enough that is will give them something to do.

  • Hoot by Carl Hiaasen (2002) Excellent Read

We picked this book off the summer reading list from my daughter's school. She loves it.There are parts she reads over and over while laughing. I love seeing my children reading and enjoying it as well. I started reading to them as babies.I strongly believe that it helps reading to your children early in life.My kids are straight A honor students. I am blessed.

  • EXCELLENT READING FOR YOUNG TEENS!

Our 13 year old daughter loved this book along with Mr. Hiaasen's other two youngster's books. The subject of young people taking on worthwhile causes being told in an exciting writing style is a great combination for anyone's children!
