Notes
Why Should the Fire Die? is Nickel Creek's first album without Alison Krauss in the producer's chair, and on it, the trio's genre-expanding acoustic music has shifted even farther away from it's bluegrass origins. The opening 'When in Rome' perfectly encapsulates the aggressive approach the band favors, and features poetic lyrics far more obtuse than those of most groups with similar roots. The disc's first half stays rooted in a fairly conventional folk mode, with a lovely cover of Bob Dylan's 'Tomorrow Is a Long Time' (one of the few solo vocal turns from fiddler Sara Watkins) and 'Jealous of the Moon' (co written with the Jayhawks' Gary Louris). Sugar Hill. 2005.

    definitely not bluegrass

CD copy is fine, in good condition. However, the recording stinks. It is not the bluegrass that I expected. It's not worth trying to return it, but don't be fooled. The music is weird. Not even a genre that I can discern. I'm sorry I bought it, but it was cheap, so it goes in the pile of cheap worthless CDs I have taken a chance on over the years.

  • Branching Out From Within the Bluegrass Realm

Why Should the Fire Die? is Nickel Creek's third entry into the alternative Bluegrass genre, aptly named 'Newgrass'. Why Should the Fire Die showcases the trio's musical talent beautifully. The CD is a continuum of Nickel Creek's often mystical and lyrical strains of mandolin, fiddle and guitar. If you're looking for strictly bluegrass music, this CD doesn't adhere to traditional bounds. These three grammy winning artists and songwriters seem to be spreading their wings, as each songwriter seduces you into their private world. Chris Thile offers an entrancing waltz with 'Jealous of the Moon' and then cooly tells what sounds like an autobiographical tale of romance in 'Can't Complain'. Sean Watkins' guitar revels ...

  • Great CD

Great CD. I would rate it 4.5 out of 5, where "5" means superb best ever. I've listened to 4 of Nickel Creek's CDs and, for me, this is the best one. Instrumentation is very nice sometimes startlingly so, themes of the songs are interesting, none of the words or themes are silly. It's one of those CDs where you look forward to listening to each track, rather than skipping some tracks or wishing they were shorter. The seemingly obligatory one classic folksong is done straightforward but with original and rather interesting accompanying music rather than simply being a cover.

  • Nickel Creek Keeps Getting Better

If you are looking for a bluegrass album, this is not it. However, if you are looking for anything else (except maybe techno) you need this CD. The more I listen to this CD the more I fall in love with it. I was a big fan of Nickel Creek's first two releases, and when I first heard this CD I was not such a fan (as always seems to be the case with amazing albums). But it didn't take long before loved it. Almost every song is amazing...though I tend to skip over Best of Luck, and sometimes Anthony. Instrumentals are stunning, musicianship is unbelievable as always, vocals are perfect. The song When in Rome packs a punch to start off the album, and Stumptown is one of my favorite instrumental tunes ever. Basically, you should get this CD. The more you hear of it the more you ...

  • Beautiful music

I heard one of the songs on the radio and just had to have it. It was no disapointment.
