Ebay HEI distributor ROCKS!
Ok, I have a chevy 400 small block I bought for 250 bucks sans distributor. Been sitting for nearly 25 years in a crumbling building in a very small Nebraska town. Got it home and it was locked up solid. After two cans of PB Blaster and a gallon of diesel fuel down the intake, let sit for a week, and sure enough she broke free. Ordered this distributor expecting it to me a poorly made Chinese parody of an HEI. (like my aluminum water pump that looked like someone had shaved the cooling passage to block sealing surface with a weed whacker, took two hours with a hand file to get it level enough to seal). UNLIKE that water pump, the distributor plopped right in, and the engine fired on the second turn. The only thing I wish is that they had an "option" to buy an aluminum distributor hold ... The only thing I wish is that they had an "option" to buy an aluminum distributor hold down bracket/clamp WITH it when you order it. (had to buy one separately, since the engine didn't have one, but honestly, it's a BILLET aluminum housing and using the cast iron rusty grungy hold down clamp would LOOK awful, even if it did the job fine. For the extra 5 bucks it cost me to buy one, I'd have much preferred to do one stop shopping. Do you folks have ANY idea just how hard it is to find ANY 1970's GM cars with the full size HEI ignition (the BIG distributor, not the small one they used on the 86 on up fuel injected cars, as that won't fit properly) I went to FOUR "u-pull-it" junkyards and there were exactly ZERO cars or trucks (GM) with the old HEI system. There was one old Cadillac, but that had a two terminal HEI, not the single one. The GREAT thing about these HEI distributors is that you only need ONE SINGLE WIRE to make the car run (if you're carbureted). Well, two if you count the wire to the starter solenoid. Also, they should include the spark plug retention ring that matches the color of the distributor cap. Those are getting hard to find in junkyards as well, and it would be ice to have them color matching (if I hadn't gotten a stock black cap anyway) So I have a VERY positive report to make. I'm planning on buying four more of these to use on my boats (the EXACT same distributor is listed on ebay as a marine unit, except it costs 275 bones!) Dave
