I'm Sorry I Bought This!
I was looking for a video version of this classic book to use in my class room. My students and I read an abridged version of the book, they then selected a chapter (or two) from the book, and designed and completed a quilt block illustrating the characters and events in their chapter(s). I wanted a video of the book to use as a "wrap-up" for the unit. I was thrilled when I read the list of actors in this version. They are award-winning, and have entertained me greatly in other movies. This version was a huge disappointment! Crucial scenes were omitted or completely changed, central characters' names were changed, and the ending was changed. What more can be said? I cannot possibly use this in my class. Shame on the screenplay writers for misusing a classic book! I really wish someone, ... I was looking for a video version of this classic book to use in my class room. A great family movie, but not a historical document.
This is a great family movie if you want to learn more about slavery and its effects on people. It's clean and appropraite for all ages. However, if you are looking for a movie that catches the religous and political fervor of Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, this one falls short of the mark. While a few of Stowe's religious concerns behind slavery are vaguely mentioned, her political arguments are left out completely.This is a great family movie if you want to learn more about slavery and its effects on people.
