I purchased this for my wife who is interested in quilting. The work space is perfect. Bernina quality is in every feature. Some complain that they have trouble using it, but if they would slow down and pay attention to the manual or even watch instructional videos online, they could see that everything is intuitive and makes perfect sense. Threading and sewing is very easy. Stitches are perfectly formed. The 830 is solid and stable. It has the feeling of quality and of being the substantial machine that it is. The Bernina 830 is a great buy, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants the convenience and reliability found in a high-end machine.

When I opened the box and saw how large this was I was taken back. This is a great machine but it is not for beginners. I have another Bernina 440E so I was familiar with some of the features. However, the automatic needle threader did not work properly and had to be repaired. This was probably because of the shipping distance from the west coast area. It took some time to adjust to this 830, and especially all the bells and whistles it came with. The stitches are beautiful and as a quilter I love the extra space between the needle back to the throat. It is great for making large quilts and travel duffle bags. It took some time for me to stay that I love it, but I had to be honest and give myself time to get over the learning curve period. I would recommend you do your homework first on this and watch all the you tube videos that you can find. This will give you a good idea if this is the right fit for you.Read full review

I bought my 830LE from a Bernina dealer in PA. It was used with low to medium time on it. It is the 830LE which is the same as the 830E except it comes with about a $1000 worth of OESD software, the trim color is maroon, and they only made. 4000 of the. I am 76 years old male and i got sewing bug at 75, LOL. My first advice is to make sure this machine is for you. Study everything you can on Youtube. Download the manual for free on Bernina website. Read, Study, read, study. I live an hour from the nearest Bernina store as many people do. This makes the classes harder to get to, but the mastery classes are highly recomended. I didn't do them but I wish I had. So six months into this sewing computer, I feel as though I almost have it mastered by myself. If you do as I did, dont give up. You will have thread breaks and bunching up under the stitch plate, on top of the stitch plate and all kinds of things which you will probably find out they are operator error. One woman who runs sewing classes for the 830E said she cleans and oils her bobbin area every morning. Others say change the needles often. Another lady said use good brand thread. Another lady said buy good needles. Finally this machine will stop intimidating you as you become more familiar with all of its bells and whistles. When i first got it, I was so proud of it that i would stay up late at night embroidering little things, and then bamm, a needle would break, or thread would start nesting up under the stich plate. I would be very frustrated and i couldnt even go to sleep. My poor wife felt so sorry for me. I was ready to sell it for half of what i bought it for. I paid $4100 and it was like new. (These were selling for over $10,000 out the door, so i felt good about getting one that was three years old at a good discount from the original price)Then I started learning one little thing at a time. It sure would have been better if i had taken the mastery classes, but I didn't. (I will still take some classes when timing is convenient). Now, i won't sell it for what I gave for it, I love everything about it. If it is for you, study it all you can. They are a hightek instrument that will do fantastic things. You may even think it is broken when actually all you have do sometime is retread it. I met one lady at JoAnn Fabric who have her neice a high dollar Brother embroiderh machine because it confused her and she couldnt figure it out. They are all new high tech devices. Stay with it if you get one and don't give up...Read full review

If you want a high quality, flexible machine, this is the one to look at first. We looked at machines from Pfaff, and Viking/Husqvarna also, but feel, from our experience with Bernina, that Bernina is better. My wife has been sewing with Bernina machines for more than 30 years. She still has her first Bernina, and it still works beautifully. She can still get parts for it also, just in case. Bernina machines are reliable, efficient, last a long time if maintained properly, and user friendly. When my wife's passion for embroidery and quiltmaking outpaced her machine's capabilities, we looked at the upper end Bernina models, and found that the 8 series machines were up to the task at hand. We realized that a NEW Bernina 8 series would cost the same as a new small car! You have to justify buying one far beyond just sewing and a bit of embroidery. So what would the machine have to do to make it worth the money? Turns out it does just about everything. Depending on model, it has enough built-in stitches to decorate any piece of sewing you want to do. And, with the optional (expensive) embroidery module, you have a powerhouse combination. The 8 series also includes productivity aids that have been developed in previous models, but continue to set the standard. We didn't justify buying a new one, but we did find a used one that had low stitch count and hours used at a reasonable price. Go for it - you'll be glad you did.Read full review

This is an amAzing workhorse of a machine. I had just sold my Bernina 807 (which I bought in 1975 and wanted the 830) so that I could purchase this Bernina 830. In 1975 when I bought my first Bernina, I did a lot of research and test-driving re other machines. It has every bit as much power as it did when new (as did my 807, which came with a 40-year guarantee). It runs smoothly & surely, with good tension still intact as well. There are 20 specialty stitches which can be used for any number of creative applications. This sewing machine is a definite go-to appliance if you are looking for everlasting quality but refuse to pay $1,000-$10,000 for the new sewing machines on the market. Plus, I much prefer a machine that is NOT electronic so that one can troubleshoot themselves if necessary. Also, the manual is free online at the Bernina website. So get on eBay ... buy this machine!! You won't be sorry for even one moment.Read full review
