Review and install of Williams WGRS-54

Installed this sight on a H&R/New England Firearms break open single shot 30-30. Because it is taller than the original rear sight I had to install a taller front sight..I used an old Williams sweat on front ramp. I installed it with the mounting screw in one of the original front sight screw holes and used JB Weld to bond it to the barrel. I made an index mark on the windage slide and the base so I could see what direction and amount I was moving the windage. The sight adjustments are very basic but it did zero at 100 yards. The WGRS-54 fit easily on the barrel dovetails and the adjustments worked fine. The front sight replacement would have been easier if the rifle would have had a replaceable sight bead.

    Works but required fitting

The sight works as intended and is well-finished but required over an hour of filing and trial fitting to work on the Henry lever action it was purchased for. This is apparently as designed in order to fit varying rail dimensions but that is not stated until reading the instructions for installing the sight. There are other sights out there of similar quality that don't require this extensive a level of fitting in order to work. You'll probably save money using this one instead but personally I think the extra money is worth not having to do the fitting.

  • Lightweight

Bought with the intended use on my Crosman 2240 with a steel breech. No filling to make it fit on the dovetails was necessary. With aging eyes, the answer has very gladly been the peep sight. With the distance this pistol is properly held away from your sighting eye, I recommend the use of a twilight .150 aperture. The only issue I found with this sight right now is with the ghost ring/windage adjustment piece. While the adjustment range is sufficient, the tolerance between it's mounting is, in my opinion, too great. This tolerance allows the piece to tilt forward or backward as the lock down screw is tightened. Also recommend the use of a custom fiber-optic front sight available from "needful things" here on Ebay.

  • high quality improvement over standard sights

I have this sight on several of my smaller caliber guns, high quality for a fair price.

  • Great peep

This is a great peep sight, easy to install and adjust. Just as accurate as a scope out to at least 100 yds for me. Great for tracking big woods bucks.
