About this product

Product Information

For sharp pictures with good color saturation, balance, and a large aperture, the Minolta Maxxum AF 50mm f/1.7 AF Lens is an affordable SLR option. This lens is an autofocus SLR with a focal length of 50mm and is designed with enter-weighted metering, which comes with a life-sensing touch switch. This allows the user to turn on the meter without putting pressure on the button; all you have to do is touch it. You can also use this feature to turn on and lock the autofocus, using a little extra pressure on the button. And to shoot, just press the button all the way. This version of the Minolta A-mounting system lens is compatible with Minolta Maxxum and Sony Alpha cameras. How it works is the AF, or autofocus, motor in the camera connects to the lens from the external lens mount. Just use the screwdriver-like connection to twist on your lens and start snapping pictures. The lens also comes with a body-integral AF system and full digital computer control. It’s a fixed, or prime, lens that can operate both on auto and manual modes. The 50mm length on the lens gives you pictures almost like what you can see with your bare eyes, the 35mm lens being the closest to your natural eyesight. 50mm lenses are also essential to any photographer because the wide aperature allows more light into the lens, allows you to use a faster shutter speed or lower ISO, or a combination of the two. Bokeh, which is how the lens renders focal areas, is typically better with a 50mm lens. It also prevents the dreaded camera shake, and it’s very versatile and travels well. And the Minolta AF 50mm f/1.7 AF Lens actually has a wider aperture at f/1.7, comparable to Zeiss and Pentax lenses, than the typical f/1.8 you get with Nikon, Canon, and Olympus brands, allowing even more light into your photo. Also, the lowest aperture for this lens is f/22, making this a great addition to your gear. The lens is lightweight and portable at only 6 ounces, and with a diameter of only 2.6 inches, it easily fits into your camera bag. The lens also comes with a filter. The Tiffen 49 to 55 step up ring lets you use a 55 mm threaded filter on the 50 mm lens. It’s made of aluminum alloy to prevent the filter from jamming.

This seller is awesome. Excellent product, better than described, excellent packing and quick shipping. Agreed on a combined item shipping price and they refunded what the price came up over. Doesn’t get better than this. Highly recommended. Hope to buy from again.

Good value lens, with inevitable tradeoffs

I'm really happy with this for the money, I'm a casual photographer who has some needs above what a smartphone can capture. Pros - solid build; easy to use; when it focuses, it's sharp, much better than the out-of-box zoom lens from Sony. Cons - sometimes struggles to find AF, especially when close to minimum focal length; AF changes are clunky

  • Best investment for your camera, bar none!

The 50 mm prime lens is the absolute best addition you can make to your DSLR camera. They are usually available with the widest aperture being somewhere between 1.8 and 1.4, and are readily available used and new for all popular DSLR brands. The widest opening on this particular lens is 1.7, which will allow you to shoot without flash in much lower light settings than your kit lens will allow. This is also a great lens for taking portraits, as you can get a shallower depth of field with the wider aperture settings. Fixed focal length lenses are lighter and almost always produce better image quality than a zoom lens shooting at similar focal length. For those who do not already know, the minolta maxxum lenses will fit and work with your Sony alpha mount camera, and the minolta lenses are ...

  • great lens and cheap

the image is so sharp and bokeh is amazing. low light works nice. fast auto focus , the only thing that would be perfect if only the manual focus ring was easier to use it's so small and smooth cant even put my fingers and have simple grip on it . will that is just with manual focus and other than that the lens worth more especially if you have full frame camera. if you have any question, I'm ready to answer

  • Great into to macro lens!

I picked this up after being dissatisfied with "macro" lenses that weren't "true macro" lenses. 1:1 magnification is super cool. To get to 1:1 and be in focus you've got to be CRAZY close to your subject. So much that sometimes a ring light won't actually be able to shine on anything because it's in the shadow of the ring. Do yourself a favor and also pick up a cheap AF teleconverter for not only more magnification, but the ability to back up and still achieve greater than 1:1. The distance from the subject helps a little bit for lighting.

  • Great built and photo quality for its price, get it before prices go higher

Have taken several photos since I get this lens, from beautiful portraits to nice landscapes. I can't believe the quality I am getting with such an economic lens. Good build quality, sharp, easy to handle because of its low weight and small size. The only issue you will have is only if it is your first time with a fixed lens you'll need to get used to it and learn more how to compose and frame, but that has nothing to do with this review, you will love the results anyway. I highly recommend it!
