What separates the first 6 Van Halen recordings from the post-David Lee Roth era offerings by the band of the same name is the deep cuts; the tracks that didn't make it on to MTV or top 40 radio at the time (remember top 40 radio?). With 1984, Van Halen left us Drop Dead Legs, House of Pain, Girl Gone Bad and Top Jimmy (to be fair the last saw some air-play), all of which are better than most of the singles that the Sammy Hagar edition of the band scraped off the cutting room floor. Drop Dead Legs is just filthy rock with nasty riffs, a fat groove (maybe the most the band ever borrowed from Led Zep), and DLR doing what he does better than anyone. House of Pain bleeds with the tension that was tearing the band apart at the time. I never skip Girl Gone Bad. And Top Jimmy exhibits more interesting harmonic work than Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai or Joe Satriani ever recorded. When grouped with Hot for Teacher and Panama, you have a GREAT hard rock record that sounds GREAT 26 years later. Continuing the experimentation that he began on Women and Children First, Edward Van Halen offered up the synth-pop, top-40 singles that divided fans at the time. Fans of 1984/Jump and I'll Wait will remembered being ridiculed by friends who were discovering Motley Crue and Metallica for going over to the spandex side. Well, now that I'm in my 30's as the band was at the time, I understand. I'll Wait is a great experiment of pop (and STILL manages to have a killer, I-need-to-learn-THAT-note-for-note guitar solo in it). And Jump is simply fun. 1984 solidifies the band's legacy as one of the GREATEST rock and roll shows EVER. And the re-mastering job by Chris Bellman is brilliant - this is why Compact Discs were invented.Read full review
This album was the last one that David Lee Roth recorded with Van Halen and he definitely left on a high note. This is a very fun album, with the classic feel-good song "Jump." This song seems to have set the tone for a lot of bands in the years following. "Panama" is one of Van Halen's most beloved songs and can still be heard often on the radio. "Top Jimmy" is one of my favorite songs ever by Van Halen. It's a great country/blues number that is one of their best foot-stompers. "Hot For Teacher" is another highlight, with it's great intro and fast, furious playing. You can tell they probably had a lot of fun doing this one, including the video for the song. Every song is cool on this one and if you've never heard this before, this is essential 80's hard rock that you should definitely check out. If you're already a Van Halen fan, make sure that this is in your collection!Read full review
if you never herd this buy this and thank me laterlisting 1. 1984 2. Jump 3. Panama 4. Top Jimmy 5. Drop Dead Legs 6. Hot For Teacher 7. I'll Wait 8. Girl Gone Bad 9. House Of Pain Details Playing time: 33 min. Producer: Ted Templeman Distributor: WEA Recording type: Studio Recording mode: Stereo SPAR Code: AAD Album notes Van Halen: David Lee Roth (vocals); Eddie Van Halen (guitar, keyboards); Michael Anthony (bass, background vocals); Alex Van Halen (drums, percussion, background vocals). Recorded at 5150 Studios, Hollywood, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This was vocalist David Lee Roth's final record for the band and as such, the album stands as a testament of worth somewhere between high camp and high class. Eddie Van Halen's venerable, rolling guitar pulled immaculately into place, while his new-found love of the keyboard gave them their first international smash with "Jump." However, it is the quite demented rush of "Panama," and the hilarious "Hot For Teacher," with Roth exuding a droll litany of school-yard fantasies over a thunderous Alex Van Halen backbeat, that gives ultimate credence to the rock 'n' roll party that was the Roth/Van Halen partnership.Read full review
