About this product

Product Information

With QuickTime movie features, convenient options and zoom capabilities, D-490 Zoom is boldly going where no Olympus D-400 Series camera has gone before! Housed in a stylish champagne gold metallic compact point-and-shoot body, Olympus D-490 Zoom now offers a 2.11 megapixel resolution CCD and 3x optical zoom lens with QuickTime movie ability for an outstanding value. Further extending the Olympus line of award winning digital cameras, D-490 Zoom has improved menus and function button for easier access to the camera's full line of features. It features new Olympus branded long life Lithium batteries; a wider choice of compression modes with a new Standard Quality mode for better pictures for the web; DPOF support for setting the camera to print specific images and quantities with DPOF printers; and the ability to display file names on the LCD.Designed with the consumer in mind, Olympus D-490 Zoom's popular "clam shell" body design has become a proven success with consumers for both style and functionality. The camera is lightweight and very compact. The protective lens barrier slides open with one hand, which simultaneously turn on the camera and extend the zoom lens. The optical zoom lens automatically retracts into the camera when the lens barrier is closed. Designed for speed, D-490 Zoom offers one of the fastest start-ups in the industry coupled with fast shot-to-shot performance capabilities. D-490 Zoom offers a fast shot-to-shot performance. With the internal high-speed memory enhancement, shots can now be taken as quickly as the image is focused, with shots being held in the buffer. This means no more waiting between shots. The memory also allows for burst mode shooting. This mode enables users to shoot and capture up to 10 images in half-second intervals in all quality modes: SQ, HQ and SHQ. Similar to that of advanced film cameras, activation is easy. Once burst mode is selected, simply hold the shutter button down and the camera does all the work. Up to 10 images are written through internal memory and saved to the removable SmartMedia card for later review. With the QuickTime movie mode you can film mini motion pictures with your D-490 Zoom camera at 15 frames per second for up to 60 seconds (in Standard Quality mode and 15 seconds in High Quality mode). These movies can then be played back on the camera's color LCD monitor, on a computer after being downloaded, or on a television by utilizing the NTSC video out capability. D-490 Zoom is a great camera for the beginner or experienced digicam user and delivers excellent pictures time and time again.

  • These are still good cameras

I have had this same camera model for about 6 years. I know it's old and has low megapixels, but I've tried other cameras and none of them have made me happy. It focuses quickly on moving objects and the pictures seldom blur. The flash has to be popped up so I can quickly take pictures without a flash, which I seem to do a lot. It's tough as nails. I have three of them now, one is my Ebay camera for taking pictures for listings (have dropped it about three times, it still works!), it's set on a lower megapixel so it doesn't take up a lot of storage room on the card. The second camera I carry with me everywhere and is set to a higher resolution. It makes perfect 4 x 6 prints, even though it's only set at about 2 megapixels. I'm sure I could make 8 x 10 ...

  • Olympus D-490 Digital Camera

I needed a 2nd camera. I have a Olympus D-460, and I knew the D-490 took pictures faster than the D-460. You don't need a USB cable connect, just buy an inexpensive card reader less that 10 bucks on eBay, and you can down load your pictures faster than you can imagine. Plus it uses 4 batteries, which gives you twice as much time to use it without adding new batteries. Be sure and use NIMH Rechargable 2000mAh batteries Duracell is good as well as many others on the market. The only draw back, it is hard to find picture cards for these older cameras, and when you do they are more expensive than the XD cards for the newer cameras. I like this camera so much I bought 2 of them, because one had 128MB card, and the card costs more than the camera.

  • Little- known Facts about the D490

My first digital camera was the Olympus D470 w/1.3 Mega pixel. By chance I discovered two things about the camera that were extraordinary. One is that the camera is sensitive to infrared light. With the proper filter one can take pictures recording only infrared light, which of course can be done in apparent darkness. The other thing (one far more useful to me) is that the camera works extremely well with my Kowa 82mm scope. Even with the most primitive connection (simply camera held to scope), one can produce striking, close-up photographs of wildlife that have amazing clarity at only 1.3 mega pixels. My next camera, an Olympus C 740 series, had many advantages but was not compatible with my scope. Nor is the Olympus E-500 (which I use primarily now) unless I were willing to buy an ...

  • Excellent Digital Beginners Camera

This Camera, even though it takes a small 2.1 megapixle photo (by todays standards) takes beautiful photos in automatic mode. Excellent Value for what you get, easy to use (much easier than my 5.1 MP SLR!) and ALMOST as good pictures! I've bought 2 of these, and now rarely use the 5.1, as most of my photos are for ebay or computer use, unless you are shooting for a magazine or printed piece, this will be all you need! PROBABLY MORE than you really need! Choose carefully before buying anything else!!!
