  • Old iMac 512Mb video card

    Old 24" iMac's (circa 2008) have a common problem... the Nvidia video cards thermally cycle and develop intermittent connections, then the screen goes blank, making the iMac useless. I reflowed the board and the video came back to life, but didn't last more than a couple of months. I did this a couple of times. Then, I decided to reball the Nvidia BGA. I think I damaged the IC pulling it off of the board with a heat gun. At over 1000 pads, even with melted solder, the IC has a lot of stiction. I think I damaged the chip with too much heat. Anyway, I attempted to reball the IC. VERY time consuming. Reflowed it. The solder balls looked good, but it didn't work, probably because the chip was likely damaged. I bought the replacement video board, made sure all of the heatsink ...
