About this product

Product Information

E. Elias Mehrige's SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE explores the fictional premise that the star of director F.W. Murnau's 1922 German expressionist horror film, NOSFERATU, was an actual vampire. When the dictatorial Murnau (John Malkovich) sets about filming his monster masterpiece, he makes a Faustian deal and enlists the grotesque, reclusive Max Schreck (Willem Dafoe) to play the rodentlike Count Orlok. Schreck proceeds to both horrify and fascinate the unwitting cast and crew---including producer Albin Grau (Udo Kier), actor Gustav von Wangenheim (Eddie Izzard), and actress Greta Schroeder (Catherine McCormack)--who, at first, believe Schreck is merely an eccentric actor. As the production continues, however, mysterious accidents and deaths begin to reveal why Schreck never gets any makeup. From its lavish opening sequence to Murnau's filming of the final scene, Mehrige's movie serves as a tribute not only to the original NOSFERATU but to the art of cinema itself. Because Murnau's project is a silent film, the overbearing director can coax and shout at his actors during the takes, making for some cleverly comical scenes. Although Malkovich, Izzard, and Kier are excellent in their roles, SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE could simply not exist without Dafoe's hideous and hilarious performance, which ranks among the finest of the versatile actor's career.

  • Clever concept on an old tale.

Shadow of the Vampire is a clever twist on the making of the 1921 film Nosferatu. It is a highly stylized look at the German film industry during the Weimar Republic. An era that spawned many later Hollywood stars and directors. William Defoe's vampire is more human than other Dracula interpretations. Not endowed with so many fantastic powers. When he tells John Malkovich's director character that "we are not so very different you and I" he illuminates the reasons and motives of the film makers. While a little slow to get start the attentive viewer will find a thoughtful and ultimately horrific experience.

  • Shadow of the Vampire

We bought this because we are silent movie fans, and this is a modern take on the making of "Nosferatu". Excellent movie, a mix of fact & fantasy, rumor & real. Which is rumor, which is real??? That question keeps you spellbound, and still wondering days later! So glad we bought it! Stands alone, but watch "Nosferatu" first! The only disappointment is that we had read the entire script online, and some important elements were not included in the final cut, but stiil a very good movie! Recommended!

  • Creating a classic out of A CLASSIC!

Nosferatu was the first vampire movie. A 1920s silent horror that stills hold the power to haunt movie fans today. What was it that made this movie so haunting? Could it be that it was not simply the an actor, but a true monster which we follow through the shadows and into our fears! This is the story that Shadow of A Vampire presents, with an interesting twist on history and unforgettable performances by some of the greatest actors of today! Willem Dafoe and John Malkovich confront us with a story we know cannot be true, but continue to storm forward through and MAKE you believe that what they say and do must be true! At times it feels as this is more of a documentary then an original tale. It truly astounds and shocks giving us what movies are meant to be, ENTERTAINMENT, in every sense ...

  • shadow of the vampire

its not as funny as i hoped that it would be. i dont know why but i was expecting a cohen brothers type sence of humor. the cinematography is pretty cool. i guess its more of an art flim than i thought it was but i like thode types of movies anyway. its also pretty neat how they copied scenes from the original nosferatu film. i say buy it if you like the things i just mentioned but avoid it if your looking for super funny film.
