About this product

Product Information

With ZATOICHI, Takeshi Kitano, best known for such gangster films as VIOLENT COP, BOILING POINT, and BROTHER, makes his first period drama, an updating of the classic Japanese character portrayed by Shintaro Katsu in movies and television from 1962 to 1989. Zatoichi is a blind samurai who shuffles from town to town, righting wrongs with his remarkable sword hidden within his cane. He is also a masseuse who likes to gamble. Kitano serves as director, writer, co-editor, and star of the film, playing the protagonist under his acting name, Beat Takeshi. This version of Zatoichi, based on the stories of Kan Shimozawa, is more violent than the earlier series, as Kitano strives to make it more realistic. He has also infused a clever sense of humor, while cinematographer Katsumi Yanagishima adds beautiful depth of field to many scenes. When Zatoichi arrives in a small town, he unknowingly walks into a classic tale of revenge, as two women plot to kill the men who murdered their family. As Zatoichi becomes more involved, an eventual showdown with young samurai Hattori (Tadanobu Asano, who excelled in Takashi Miike's very violent ICHI THE KILLER) is inevitable. ZATOICHI is thrilling filmmaking at its best, an endlessly entertaining samurai epic from a man who fully understands the genre and is not afraid to take it to the next level.SONATINE tells the story of gang boss Murakawa (Takeshi Kitano), who decides to consolidate his power as he approaches middle age. When his boss responds by assigning him to a peacekeeping mission in a town where a couple of the gang's provincial chapters are coming to blows, Murakawa is naturally suspicious. Is he being kicked upstairs--or kicked out? When he and his crew become the targets of a bloody ambush, the conclusion seems inescapable. A brutal indictment of the soul-crushing yakuza lifestyle.

    Zatoichi remake :-) pretty good

I like zatoichi, and the dubbing was done pretty well. He isnt the original actor, but nice job. kind of a japanese gunfighter movie :-) . If he does another, I'll probably see it .

  • A nice pair of films from Beat Takeshi

For the price, this is a nice 2 DVD set of films from Takeshi Kitano (a.k.a. Beat Takeshi). He starred in, & directed both films, he is one of Japans most popular actor/directors. Zatoichi - The Blind Swordsman is a 2003 remake of the original Zatoichi movies and television shows, which were released 1962-1989. While I did find the movie very entertaining, and gave it 4 stars. I do prefer the original films, starring Shintaro Katsu as the blind swordsman. Sonatine is a Yukuza type gangster film with a dramatic twist, and a slash of dark comedy. It is very good film, would give this one 4.5 stars. This set is a great introduction to the films of Takeshi Kitano, I would reccomend this to any one who likes action films.

  • a 10!!!!!

this is a super martial-arts film! But very subtle. and amusing at times. the story is a complex "human interest" story. U care about the people in it. the direction is astonishing. and the ending is mind-blowing.

  • VERY GOOD MOVIE

I saw this movie at Best Buy and got it on sale. When I took it home and watched it; it surprised me. First of all the action is pretty good as well as the one liners in it. Secondly, the cinematography is excellent. The story line and plot are woven very well and it's a must-see for those wanting to watch a good martial arts movie with a plot.

  • The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi

Absolutely great film. The final confrontation between hero (Zatoichi) and the top villian has to be one of the most satisfying since "Once Upon a Time in the West". The character of Zatoichi represents a significant entry into the mythos of the Lone Hero, rightly taking his place among the likes of Shane and Cyrano de Bergerac.
