This was a used one and it does work, but it makes a horrendous whining noise. I reached out to Baratza customer service (who are awesome to deal with) and they are getting me the repair part and sent me super detailed repair directions so I can fix it. Best part about these is the brand prides themselves on repair vs replace.

I bought the Baratza Encore based on many reviews I saw that pointed to it being a great entry level burr grinder. Well, the whole point of upgrading to a burr grinder from my old whirlybird coffee mutilator was to get a consistent grind. As far as I can see, the Encore grinders produces the same wide-range of particle sizes that the old Braun whizzergigit did - anything from powder to chunks, when I was aiming for a middle-range grind for a drip coffee maker. I'm sure it'll grind very fine for espresso, etc. but for just a regular ol' cup of joe, it falls short.

So you bought another $50 "Burr" grinder and somehow it's hardly better than your $20 blade grinder? That is because it isn't a true conical burr. This one will deliver consistent grinds. My old Krups machine pretty much didn't yield consistently sized grinds. Coarse grinds yielded cloudy cold brew due to fine particles in with the coarse. This machine on the coarsest setting makes perfect cold brew with almost zero sediment. I used to have filter the cold brew after brewing with the Krups. As the entry model, you get no frills, but excellent performance with the encore. I love that you set the grind on top, so it's easy to see the setting. Hard to forget that you're dialed in for espresso when you are making cold brew, etc. Slower grinding, with no digital display, timer or scale, but works perfectly with your manual control. I only am missing the automatic shut off. Solidly built. Read the manual before using it. Don't too much at a time. Not over the line around two thirds up and it won't jam on you. If you need those other features, get a higher model by Baratza. It's a tank, not a toy. Highly recommended. Read full review

Great quality product. This is my first time preparing fresh ground coffee for my French press. A little bit of extra time spent for a great cup of coffee. Was disappointed that I had to go on line for a manual but it just shows I'm old school. As a retiree I'm so glad I now have the extra time to pamper myself in this way. I made the mistake of trying to work it before reading the manual. BIG MISTAKE. I clogged the grinder and spent unnecessary time cleaning it. After that, I had no problem. READ THE MANUAL.

The first time I used it it worked great. Set the grind for 12 for an aeropress, and it seemed to do a good consistant grind. The second time I tried to grind, it would not work at all. Originally I thought it was broken, but it turns out the output shoot was completely clogged. I couldn't reach it with any of the supplied tools, so i had to stick a butter knife up there and free the clog. After that, I cleaned the entire machine again and it began working.

The only aggravating thing about this grinder is the silicone gasket. Not easy to get into place, but once I heated it in hot water I was able to get it properly positioned. Otherwise I am extremely happy with this burr grinder.

This is an excellent grinder for the price and Baratza gives the best after sales service of any company I've ever dealt with. The employees seem like coffee fanatics which is what you want with a product like this. The Encore is simple and basic with the focus is on quality burrs and other good mechanical components, not on fancy timers, scales or digital displays. Baratza has those on it's pricier grinders. It has 40 grind settings from talcum powder to ultra course. Those who say it won't grind fine enough for espresso have a problem with their machine, most likely because the little plastic tabs on the burr holder have broken off - those are designed to break off in case a rock or an un-roasted bean gets in there which would otherwise damage the burrs. When the tabs break off you lose the ability to adjust the grind and the gap between the burrs opens up by itself. A new burr holder is available from Baratza for $4 and it's an easy fix - the instructions on their website are excellent. Any part that could break or wear out is available on their website for surprisingly low prices. If you don't want to tackle repairs by yourself they will do it for you, again, very reasonably. There is also a somewhat secret upgrade to the Encore where you can upgrade the cone burr to their M2 burr normally found in their higher end but discontinued Virtuoso and Preciso models. I have not done the upgrade but it apparently increases grinding speed and improves grind consistency. At $35 it's not a super cheap upgrade but something I recon I'll try if it produces a better espresso. Bottom line, if you want a good, no frills, high quality grinder for the lowest price possible, this is the one to get. If you're tempted to spend less on another brand you should probably think again. Or if you're handy and you find a deal on a used Encore, you know you can fix the thing with all the inexpensive available parts.Read full review

Does a fine job of grinding coffee to a consistent size. Nice that you can replace the burr set. I had to toss my old, non Baratza grinder out because of worn burrs. The only thing it lacks is an automatic shut off.

Finally happy with our coffee setup - such a high quality machine. I had to take it apart recently when I lifted the bin off without emptying it first and coffee beans went everywhere including inside the machine. Took the cover off and emptied out the beans - you can see it's well built and the grind section looks very sturdy. It's not any quieter than our crappy blade grinder but it's a low pitched sound so less annoying. at the finest setting it's so fine you can't see the grains, and it also works well for French press. Should last a long time since it looks designed to be maintained at home by ordering parts and replacing them. In this age of cheap appliances this is refreshingly well made.

It’s as good pretty much everyone says, I don’t do too much specialty coffee (mostly Aeropress and pour over) but it’s straightforward, quick and has given me a consistent grind every time I’ve used it. I bought mine used knowing I’d need to replace some parts but that was super easy thanks to Baratza having parts you can order and excellent customer support. Can’t reccomend enough for people looking for a good grinder.
