Pro desktop performance in a portable, at 1/10th the MSRP
Note: This review was written in November 2025. Depending on when you read it, some information may have changed. Despite being a few years old, this Apple MacBook Pro (Late 2019, A2141) is still an incredibly powerful, useful and desirable product, and offers excellent value for money. The Intel Core i9 9880H processor is still very much alive and kicking, able to compete with desktop processors and even Apple's own M2 processor in benchmarks. Sure, it might not be as power efficient and might get warm when working on some more intensive tasks, but it's barely worth mentioning. Sadly, Apple will not be supporting any Intel based chips after macOS 26 Tahoe, which is a disappointment, but time stops for no Mac. The AMD Radeon Pro 5500M graphics card (4gb) is more than enough for content ... Note: This review was written in November 2025. Depending on when you read it, some information may have changed. The AMD Radeon Pro 5500M graphics card (4gb) is more than enough for content production and even some gaming in macOS or on Windows through Boot Camp. With driver support still available, it's still very usable day to day for most tasks. The speakers are excellent, giving a room-filling sound with crisp highs, reasonable bass, and clean mids. Some of the best I've ever experienced on a laptop computer before. The included microphone array is incredible for what amounts to a built-in microphone: crisp, clear, and excellent for video conferencing, phone calls, or narration/podcast creation. The screen, a 16" 3072x1920 panel is bright, color-accurate, and excellent to use for long sessions. At 226 PPI, the display always looks sharp and clear - easy to read, and offering very good pixel density for its size. The included webcam however is somewhat disappointing, at just 720p resolution, images come across a little soft and fuzzy. While this might be an issue for some, macOS does allow you to use your iPhone's rear camera as a webcam, mostly negating this issue. The MacBook Pro A2141 includes 4 USB C/Thunderbolt 3 ports, which is both a blessing and a curse. While the world has largely adopted USB C at this point, some accessories will require adapters and dongles to work, and with just 4 ports some users might find themselves coming up short on connectivity. A hub is recommended for people who need more connections. It also offers a 3.5mm headphone/microphone combo jack, which is useful for a wired headset or external speakers. This model also includes the love-it-or-hate-it Touch Bar, something I've become quite fond of during my time with it. This thin LCD touch strip above the number row of keys on the keyboard is a versatile, if sometimes frustrating tool, able to reconfigure itself depending on the application in use. It replaces the usual F1-F12 keys, which many have become accustomed to, requiring one to press the FN key to access the F1-F12, which some users will find annoying. However, I think the trade offs are worth the versatility. The MacBook has Touch ID, which is a fantastic time saver - just touch your finger on the power button to input passwords, give permissions, and authenticate - no need to type credentials out over and over! As these computers continue to age, battery health is a consideration - originally shipped with a 99.8 watt hour battery (or 8,790 mAh), it generally offered 5-7 hours of use between charging sessions. My unit still has more than 85% battery health remaining, and I can easily get 4-5 hours of use out of it before needing to plug in. Replacement batteries are readily available, though the replacement process is quite involved and requires specialized tools, on top of removing the battery (which is adhered to the case). Some users may find this beyond their skillset, but repair service businesses are always happy to do the work for a fee. Included with the original configuration was a 96 watt USB C charging brick, though the machine does support up to 100 watts if you wanted to use a third-party USB C charging brick. You can also charge the MacBook from a battery bank at a lower wattage, though it may take longer to charge. At 96 watts, the MacBook takes about 2 hours to charge from empty to full. Some drawbacks worth noting: - The memory and internal SSD are soldered to the motherboard, preventing upgrades or replacements - so make sure you're satisfied with the configuration you're buying, as you cannot change it later. - At 4.3lbs (2kg), it's quite a sizable machine, and might not be great for portability depending on your needs. - The A2141 model in specific is known for logic board failures relating to the SSD controller or USB C/Thunderbolt controller chips, causing the Mac to not work - Replacement parts can be pricey, especially the LCD screen and logic board In short, this A2141 MacBook Pro is a fantastic value, even as time marches on - it might not be as efficient as more recent MacBook Pros, it may not have every feature and it won't be getting any further macOS versions beyond OS26 Tahoe, it's still a very usable workhorse and your money goes quite a far distance with this laptop.
