There is a row of LEDs that estimates level of charge when attached to battery and not to AC line. When the unit is attached to both, it will charge a working battery that meets specs provided the charger has not been destroyed by an encounter with a defective battery. Upon receipt 1st tried 100% battery. AOK. 2nd tried 25% with AC red/green. 3rd 0% with AC. 4th 25% with AC, unit now defective.
