Shadow tower stands alone as a 1st person RPG in the since it offers more variety than most if not any other 1st person RPG with real time combat. (Including games like kings field series & the elder scrolls games.) 150 "different" monsters await your arrival. Ranging from simple slime & skeletons to large rock golems & great magical demons. The tower has now sunk into the ground so in contrast to what you may think, you start just inside the top of the tower & work your way down. The overall story in this game is a bit sparse & odd. The story has a strong japanese influence & pushes a little psychological questioning into the mix. The monsters inside the tower hold ancient items to help you along the way. But "most" items are only given after the monster is slain. Also there are items left lying about the tower but by whom or under what circumstances are unknown! There are also several shops of varying types. As the main character you travel through the tower(like a dungeon) slaying beasts & finding items. There is a vast array of items to find in the game some are preset & some are random. This makes replay more interesting. Standard items include Cunes(the limited item used as currency), healing potions, swords, shields, armors, rings, bracelets & more. One of the more interesting things about this game is it doesnt have a standard experience & leveling system. You never have to "grind" to increase your players stats as they are determined by the items you wear. A new shield may not just have better defense but may give you more hit points & strength as well. So this keeps the "game moving right along" & gives plenty of incentive to kill any monsters you see. Lots of secret passages are placed within the tower many holding treasures, monsters or both. There are spell enchanted rings that allow you to cast magic. Id say there are at least 10 different attack spells. As far as items like armor, swords, shields at least 20 of each. One of the main factors of the game is the items you wear have limited durability & will wear as you use them, in order to repair the items you must take them to a repair shop. But rather than pay for repairs with money(cunes) you pay with life in the form of hitpoints. This adds a need to balance out your health potion supply which fill your health up completely with the hit point cost of repairing the items you want to use. To counter balance this there are other shops that will trade you health potions for items you no longer want. This makes the game an interesting blend of trading, slaying, finding & exploring. All the combat is real time & is a bit challenging to get used (youll die a few times) to but if you give it 30-40 minutes youll really start to get the hang of it. If you have played any of the kings field or elder scrolls games it'll(combat) be fairly easy to pick up on. Within the shadow tower you never know whats around the next corner. The eery silence helps set the secluded mood of the game, all youll often hear is your footsteps & the monsters in the rooms around you.(maybe) My numerical ratings 1-10 higher is better, Game play 9 the controls are responsive, but there are a few spots in the game that slow down & on rare occasion youll see your sword hit a monster but it wont count. Graphics 8.5 for a playstation game it looks good & on a PS2 or PS3 with the "filtering turned on" it looks better(this may slow the game slightly on PS2) this looks & runs best on ps3.Read full review

Very cool game and innovative for its time. I can see how many ideas were taken from this game.
