Great Britain has controlled India for centuries, running the government, making laws, and profiting from the country's natural resources. Gandhi's goal was to see the people of India govern themselves, and he was determined to achieve freedom without violence. Inspired by his wisdom and resolve, the Indian people joined Gandhi in peaceful demonstrations, strikes, and protests. Occasionally the struggle became bloody, but Gandhi remained true to his convictions. In August 1947, the Indian Nation Congress raised a new Indian flag in the capital. After decades of fighting for freedom, India finally achieved independence. This book tells the story of a man who led his country to freedom, the man who taught the world that peaceful protest can achieve great change.
