Not a Bad Printer for the Price
I bought the CLP-510 from Staples for $199 out the door. I came on EBay and ordered the network card so I could make it a networked printer in the house. The printer works well and the prints it generates are vibrant and sharp. The print quality has not disappointed me yet and I work in an office that uses high end HP color lasers. The Samsung CLP-510 delivers. The down side is that the toner cartridges are micro-chipped so that once the page count that the cartridges are supposed to reach is attained, you must replace ALL the cartridges! Even if all you did was print a lot of black and white. Once you reach the page count you got to replace the whole set! I've seen refill kits on EBay that give you a new chip so you can continue to use the cartridges that still have toner left in them ... I bought the CLP-510 from Staples for $199 out the door. Oh and by the way, for those that say laser printers are too expensive because of the replacement toner cartridges. Do the math. A toner cartridge for the CLP-510 is rated at 5000 prints. New cartridges cost $80-$90 per. Now if you look at the $40 cost of your ink cartridges for your ink jet and that it gets about 200-400 pages at the most, the cost is about the same over time for the laser. Just something to keep in mind next time you go printer shopping.

Samsung CLP 510 Laser Printer
The printer arrived well packaged and easy to setup in just a few minutes by putting in the toner cartigages. I am very happy with the quality of printed matter and the flexibilty of the software to make many kinds of adjustment for specific needs. The double sided capablity is flawless and trouble free and print speed is great. I am told that the unit goes through toner quickly and at $400.00 for each new toner set that is a concern, but I found several refill options that should cut that cost to the same as any other laser printer. I find the sound of operation to be less than my HP ink jet so that was a pleasant surprise. So, I would rate the product excellent without the warnings about toner use being limited to 3,000 copies even with little color but found a toner chip resetting ... It will jam if you try and do double sided heavy #100 stock, but does one side easily so I merely run each side separately for heavy card stock. As for labels and other media... it is troublefree. The purchase price of the unit was excellent and shipping less than I expected. I am very happy although in my first 1,000 prints. The quality of the prints is really outstanding for fine photographic needs which is my primary use. Fast, easy to use, problem free. I am very happy with my purchase and the cheap maintenance contract of twenty bucks a year was also a good bargain.

Samsung CLP -510 Laser Printer
I purchased this printer last year for legal documents. I had a problem out the door with it. Apparently the Black toner cartridge came flawed in the original package. No big deal really and Samsung immediately shipped a new cartridge with a return label for the original. Since replacement, the printer has worked flawlessly. Now I have read some comsumer complaints about the cartridges "smart chips" disabling the printer when the ink carts get low or empty. Some claim the carts stop working prematurely. I have yet to experience this issue and hope not to. I have found that the replacement carts are rather expensive (available on ebay about 70.00 per cartridge) Refills too with new chips available but have yet to attempt any non oem refills. I have printed approx 150-200 pages so far both ... I purchased this printer last year for legal documents. I had a problem out the door with it. Id rate this printer good for the following reason: While overall the price is acceptable for its class, I am anticipating well above average toner replacement expense. Not a favorable anticipation.

Love: Amazingly fast duplex color laser that costs less than toner. Printer is refurb unit--wouldn't ever know as it came in perfect condition. Not a scratch anywhere. Cost $158 including shipping. Like: Good color accuracy for price/speed -- not to replace good ink jet when you have all the time in the world. Dislike: Text is good quality but not great. But for price & speed, this is very acceptable--no complaints at all. My work for it is quickly printing off stock quote color charts, travel maps, and general research topics. Any serious photography is still reserved for my slow but excellent ink jet. For just $158 this Samsung is an amazing deal. Noise isn't bad as I just turn it for use then immediately off. Very heavy--needs it's own stout stand. Oh..printer came with four ... Love: Amazingly fast duplex color laser that costs less than toner. buying a used Samsung CLP-510 color laser printer
1) I am very pleased with the speed, color quality, the duplexing, and the "booklet printing" option of the printer. I had hoped that the color quality would be better than the pastels of earlier-generation lasers and the faded quality of liquid toner copiers. My hopes were met and exceeded. 2) I had originally bought a used unit on eBay to see if it would meet my needs for printing my "Stories to Read to Children" booklets and associated large format illustrations. It did, with good speed and great color. 3) However, the first unit I bought had a part with a hairline crack, that produced a narrow line down every page. I bought a second "wrecked" unit on eBay - essentially for the cost of shipping. It had a good part to swap... and spare toner cartridges. After partial dis-assembly, I ... 1) I am very pleased with the speed, color quality, the duplexing, and the "booklet printing" option of the printer. I had hoped that the color quality would be better than the pastels of earlier-generation lasers and the faded quality of liquid toner copiers. My hopes were met and exceeded. 2) I had originally bought a used unit on eBay to see if it would meet my needs for printing my "Stories to Read to Children" booklets and associated large format illustrations. [It wasn't, at least for me.] 4) I bought a set of used toner cartridges and another unit which purported to lack only the toner cartridges. It was in good condition, but was missing the transfer belt - an expensive component. The vender would not make good on the missing transfer belt, saying only to keep or return the printer. After a while, I found a used one on eBay, and bought it. That printer works well now. 4) I learned of a site www.fixyourownprinter.com that has been very helpful in identifying and correcting problems. I also found on eBay a vendor selling electronic copies of the Service manual. It was a good purchase. 5) I sold the "wrecked" unit to a friend - for the cost of shipping - who found components he needed. 6) I bought another unit on eBay. It required partial dis-assembly and a lot of cleaning, but is now working well. 7)On balance, I like the printer[s]. The "fix" site has been very helpful. There are some issues, however. 7a) The top cover mechanism is badly designed. The plastic posts to hold it shut are broken in every printer. It still shuts, but it is hard to open. 7b) The waste toner collecter is a $30 "consumable" - at least according to Samsung. I - and others have elected to clean and re-use it. 7c) The Xerox 6100 is a copy of the Samsung CLP-510. I needed a "Transfer Belt" for the latter and couldn't find an affordable one, so I bought the Xerox version. It worked... except that I had to reset the menu to override the model number. 7d) Replacement toner cartridges are expensive. However, vendors on eBay offer toner refill kits. [I bought some.] Some vendors suggest drilling holes for refill; others argue for some dis-assembly and cleaning. [I prefer the latter.] Also, one must either remove and replace some electronic chips on the cartridges, or do some menu overrides. [See "fixyourownprinter.com".] Replacing the chips requires using a soldering iron... which I hadn't done since I was in boy scouts. If you don't have one, be sure to get one that is driven from a wall socket. The battery versions don't give enough heat to melt the solder. 8)On balance, I am quite pleased with the Samsung CLP-510. I took some chances, got my hands a little dirty, and ended up with three good working units, meeting my immediate needs. You might decide differently, because each unit is unlikely to have the expected life of a new one from Samsung, HP, or ???. I may sell one or two units to recover out-of-pocket costs. As for my uncompensated time and labor, I consider it a good learning opportunity. joncris
