SynopsisThrown headlong into the maze of contradictions and disparities that compriseAmerica's mental health system when his son was declared mentally ill, Earleypresents a remarkable piece of investigative journalism that demonstrates howAmerica's jails have become mental health hospitals., "A magnificent gift to those of us who love someone who has a mental illness...Earley has used his considerable skills to meticulously research why the mental health system is so profoundly broken."--Bebe Moore Campbell, author of 72 Hour Hold Former Washington Post reporter Pete Earley had written extensively about the criminal justice system. But it was only when his own son--in the throes of a manic episode--broke into a neighbor's house that he learned what happens to mentally ill people who break a law. This is the Earley family's compelling story, a troubling look at bureaucratic apathy and the countless thousands who suffer confinement instead of care, brutal conditions instead of treatment, in the "revolving doors" between hospital and jail. With mass deinstitutionalization, large numbers of state mental patients are homeless or in jail-an experience little better than the horrors of a century ago. Earley takes us directly into that experience--and into that of a father and award-winning journalist trying to fight for a better way., Former "Washington Post" reporter Pete Earley had written extensively about the criminal justice system. By exposing the wire, jewelry pieces are bright and colorful, and the wire adds texture to the design. The pieces in this book create a universal appeal with the wire being just as important as the beads. All types of jewelry makers will enjoy these modern, up-to-date styles.

  • "Crazy" .... says it all.

"Crazy" opens doors to reveal problems with treating the mentally disturbed (there are too many to list) by the legal system and the medical industries. The book is told by the father of an adult son with deeply disturbing mental problems and the hurdles he had to overcome. The book was recommended to me by a friend I met while we were serving on a nonprofit board of a detox facility. He read this book 10 years ago and made it a priority to open a facility here in Baton Rouge, which is now open and admitting those very people so misunderstood and mistreated by our existing systems for the mentally ill.
