Brush up on your shaving with a quality soap that may very well be the best out there!
I've used other shaving soaps, some good, some not worth the money spent. But this shaving soap from Van Der Hagen has never disappointed. The only reason I've ever strayed from it was it became nearly impossible to find locally. For me, it's the best you can get. Pair it with a nice mug, brush, vintage DE safety razor and quality blades, and you've got a winning combination. Nice but needs work...
You hear the name and expect something. I was and am dispointed. This is a tallow based soap, as such don’t expect seious lather. The bubbles are bug but small and tight to make a serious lather. The scent is mild and clean, think Ivory soap. It does okay to provide some slickness between your face and the blade. The foam begins to fade even as you begin your first pass. If you do a second, third or a fourth pass, expect to re-work the soap in your mug in order to lather up for each pass. Believe it or not, Arko does a better job IMO. Good product, very wasteful and expensive packaging.
I've been using this Van Der Hagen shaving soap since I received it. I've been trying different shaving soaps ever since the Williams shaving soap company either went out of business or stopped making the Williams soap. This Van Der Hagen soap is good. It lathers very thick and holds the lather very well. I'd say way superior to the Williams soap that I was used to. But the complaint and gripe I have with this product is the packaging. It comes encased and sealed with thick plastic. All around the soap. Top, bottom and around the sides. It's very difficult to take apart. Then what? You have to throw this single use plastic in the trash. This is all unnecessary and wasteful and expensive. The product can be easily placed as a whole bar inside a light cardboard container, just like the Williams soap was. Of course, I'll continue to use the soap until finished. Van Der Hagen is my go to shave soap. I shave old school with a double edge razor. I have tried many of different shave soaps, but always come back to this. There are other much more expensive soaps on the market, but for daily shaves this is the best price and best soap! I would recommend anyone trying it.
