Synopsis
In the latest novel from the bestselling author whom critics have called "the thriller writer to watch," lawyer Jack Swyteck tackles a case in which the life of his best friend hangs in the balance--and in which nothing is as it seems. Miami criminal defense attorney Jack Swyteck isn't looking for a new client, at least not one who is homeless and in jail for threatening to jump off a bridge. But from the moment Jack is called to defend the man, who goes by the name Falcon, something is amiss. For one thing, Falcon comes up with the $10,000 bail--in cash. Then the body of a brutally murdered woman is found in the trunk of the abandoned car in which he is living. Panicked and on the run, Falcon takes Jack's best friend, Theo, hostage. They end up barricaded in a motel room, and Theo isn't the only one at Falcon's mercy. Jack must work with the cops and their crackerjack negotiator to free Theo and the other captives before Falcon decides he has nothing to lose by killing them all. What Jack doesn't know is that Falcon has a much bigger agenda, and that there are people behind the scenes who will stop at nothing to keep their dangerous secrets. Thus unfolds a riveting, lightning-paced story, as only James Grippando can tell it., The man who calls himself Falcon is full of contradictions. He lives in a car but he has access to a lot of cash. And he has an obsession with the Miami mayor's daughter. First, Falcon climbs to the top of the Bay of Biscayne bridge and threatens to jump unless he can talk to Alina Mendoza. That brings in blind negotiator Vince Paulo, who makes a promise he isn't allowed to keep, and Falcon ends up in jail. Jack Swyteck doesn't want Falcon as a client but takes him on as a favor, thinking he'll plead the guy out and watch his client go to jail. But Falcon has the bail money and is on the street again in a few hours, earning Jack the enmity of the powerful and vindictive mayor. Then Falcon strikes again. Hours after his release, the body of a brutally murdered woman is found in the trunk of Falcon's car. On the run, in an attempt to highjack Swyteck and his best friend Theo, he crashes Jack's care into a motel and takes hostage the woman inside, plus Theo, in the process killing one policeman and injuring another. Jack has mere hours to get Theo and the woman out, because he realizes that Falcon has nothing left to lose. But what Jack doesn't know is that other people are involved and are keeping dangerous secrets that they will stop at nothing to conceal. Thus begins a lightningpaced, impossible to put down story, as only James Grippando can tell it., Miami attorney Jack Swyteck gets more than he bargains for after he takes on a homeless man as a client. Soon, nothing is as it seems, in this latest pulse-pounding thriller from the bestselling author of "Lying."

  • Great Book!

I bought this after reading another Jack Swyteck book in the series (Afraid of the Dark). This one was just as riveting. I only wish I had started reading them in order since some character lines are ongoing. I am now on my 3rd book (Gone Again) and it is proving to be just as good.
