These are all very good, the VAS (voice-activation system) is nice (allows you to save battery power and tape by only recording when you speak into it, then stops upon silence). Also, two speeds (regular and slow, to save tape) is handy, as is the option of playing back at fast speed to get to a place you're seeking. The sound quality is even better through headphones BUT you MUST get a stereo-to-mono plug adapter (both jacks on these are mono: 2 contacts). Monoprice is the best place for these. It's also nice to have the option to plug in an external mike to the MIC input (avoid picking up the low sound of the machine's insides, and not have to hold the recorder in your hand. It is quite small, though, and that's nice, but be careful not to push the wrong switches in the back by accident. Just make sure whoever sells it understands it and has tested it out. And if you use an external mike beware: Panasonic (unlike others) does NOT supply the tiny bit of power to the MIC input that common, inexpensive desktop _condenser_ mikes require: with these you'll pick up NOTHING. You MUST get a dynamic mike, which costs a bit more. Would have been easy enough for Panasonic to send an extra wire the MIC jack with a little juice, but go figure. It's durable, the built-in mike works well, and if you keep it clean it will be dependable (and very small). If you want to supply it with external power and save on the batteries, though, it's REALLY hard to find a 3volt DC/300mA power supply, let alone one with the teeny-tiny plug required. When you do it'll cost more than the recorder, usually. Panasonic doesn't even carry it. All in all, a very good unit. Not much different than the 404 or 502 or 402. Most of these are still in use -- finding them on ebay is pretty easy.Read full review

Honesty, I wasn't expecting to get both recorders! The silver one works fine but the black one isn't fully functional. For the price, I don't even care!

It's used, but it's in full working condition. Great buy.

The unit was more than 25 years old but looked and operated like new. These old microcassette recorders are very reliable and rarely if ever will lose recorded data unlike some digital units where the data can become "corrupted" or unrecoverable. I had a very pleasant purchase experience.
This recorder is exactly as advertised. It looks great, works perfectly and was a great price.
