Basic summary: awesome, well done strategy game. But it might not be your type of game. It is more well balanced than Civ 2, and more realistic too. The diplomacy, especially trading, makes a ton of sense. It has most of the good features from Call to Power, Alpha Centaurii, and Civ 2, including: Realistic Bombardment: In real life, catapults and such can't annihilate troop concentrations, but are good in seiges. Capturing units: workers( they build roads and such) and artillery-type units can be captured instead of destroyed. Borders: you can actually see them; none of this "you're in my city radius" crap. However, it does lack some fun aspects of Civ 2, such as fundamentalist governments (not very politically correct) and the ability to choose between a male and female leader (each leader has different portraits for each mood and time period, plus they're animated like a Harry Potter photograph. On the plus side, no stupid emissaries.) Also, you'll need to readjust your strategies if you're used to Civ 2. While there isn't any cheat menu, if it's too hard you can just re-load the game after critical battles. Also, you can just accept the fact that you can't build every wonder, or even be sure of winning the game, even at the easiest difficulty level. Another waste of time is watching the enemy painstakingly reshuffle his troops every turn, especially in a large, modern world. This can easily be avoided by turning off animation for people you're not at war with. You still have to watch them move, but they do it at a comically fast rate. In general, better than any other game of it's kind.Read full review
The game was awesome!!!! I liked it because you can pick any country and then pick if you want to be a king, queen, prince, princess, warlord, emperor, etc. Then you build villages and make armies ,and then become friends and enemies with neighbouring kingdoms. But you have to be carefull where you build your kingdom because you have to make sure they are getting enough food, water, and protection. You also can build wonders of the world like the great pyrimids, the hanging gardens, the eiffel tower, etc. But to be able to build the things you have to raise tax rates and go exploring to get money. You also can't raise the taxes to much or your city will be in chaos. Things also have to be discovered to be the best kindom in the world so you have to get explorers and discover the alphabet, then you have to discover writing, after you know writing you can discover currency, mathamatics, mapmaking, etc. Then eventually you can discover going to space and building electronics having a democracy, republic, etc. But the whole time in the game you have to be very carefull not to become enemies with the countries and make sure barbarians dont destroy your country. It is one of the most challanging games i have ever played. The game also teaches history by telling kids what came first in history before all the electronics and stuff that we know today. This game is a really good buy. This is the review given by my grand daughter Miss ARCHANA aged 13 years. thanks for reading. t.k.thanthoni(peveen)Read full review
Loads great for Windows 2000 and XP.....plays great, just like it did for me when it came out new over 12 years ago. If you try to load this on Windows 7, it may or may not work completely normally. My strong suggestion, is to do like I did, find a good computer with Windows 2000 or XP and use it just for old games like this! Civ III was so fun! I remember that when Civ IV came out, telling myself, "no game will beat Civ III"....but Civ IV is even better! Especially the diplomacy interactions on Civ IV. Civ III has the ability to load Scenarios that are super fun! You must have Civ III to enjoy Conquests supplemental package with Civ III. Conquests has the Napoleon scenario, WW II in the Pacific, etc, etc.....This game is worth buying if you like the supplement packages to play with it.... Civ III is a great game to own. I enjoy being able to name leaders to units that fight well. Civ is so good in that you have the ability to see the nation you build in all five areas at the same time: social, political, economical, militarily, and scientifically. Many of today's war games are great on graphics and show horses and soldiers attacking, but leave out the empire building mechanisms. Civ III and IV allow the player to build each military unit, building, tax dollar, etc to lead to a grand scheme of plans. I highly recommend Civ III to everyone that enjoys history or wants to shape history in there own image by leading a nation to the space age!Read full review
Product is definitely not plug and play. After multiple false starts and a little on-line research, it appears that I am not alone. Civilization III has a design flaw that requires more to correct than I have skill. Consideration should be given to withdrawing this product offering or at least warning prospective purchasers of issue.

My 9 year old loves it! As far as I can tell he has learne dalot about world history and asks more questions, I wish all games were this enlightning. I am giving this a big thumbs up and would suggest this to parents who might not appreciate video games in general as this one will really change your mind. It has given more creativity in play than any other game so far.

To be completely honest there is very little that I don't love about this game. I am not normally a fan of games that involve a lot of far reaching strategy, but this game can fit any personality type you are really. I prefer to win games with culture points. On the other hand, my brothers would build up a huge army and conquer their opponents. As you can see, no matter if you prefer to keep the peace or conquer the world, you can have tons of fun playing this game.
I think it is very fun and cool to make your own civilization. It is also cool to get all the science things and make things that the US might never have been able to make or other things that you may never of heard of. I think it may not be the easiest game ever, but it is definitely one of the most fun. I bought it because I saw civilation 4 and thought it was very cool, but expensive. So I checked out civilization 3 and found it really cheap and found it to be as cool as I thought 4 would be.
Civ 3 is a great game as I have played it on my brothers computer. I bought it but it works very poorly on my computer. My computer is new and has all required drivers. 3 installs later, I still can not get it to work. I checking into it and found 29 pages of programming failures on 1 page alone. It needs updated or removed from the market. It is not realistic for a computer user to have to go into his base programming to make a game work. Thus, it collects dust.
